COTTON STAINER

Friends, this is one more and last image of a bug I shot at an altitude of nearly 7000ft, totally unaware that its ID search would eventually lead me to its quaint name: Cotton Stainer.
Well, that is what it is, though I wonder what this insect with that kind of name could be doing in the Himalayan sub region! Cotton cannot and does not grow at that altitude. What it was ‘staining’ was a leafy kind of weed, lush and rich during monsoon rains. There were actually hundreds of them, eating, resting or making love on the leaves.
Anyway, here is a brief note on the species:

PYRRHOCORIDAE
(Cotton Stainers)

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Hemiptera

Suborder: Heteroptera

Infraorder: Pentatomomorpha

Superfamily: Pyrrhocoroidea

Family: Pyrrhocoridae

Pyrrhocoridae is a family of insects with more than 300 species world-wide. A common species in parts of Europe is the firebug. They are part of the order Hemiptera which are also known as the 'true bugs'.

A few are important crop pests. They are called cotton stainers because their red bodies get crushed along with the cotton they eat when it is harvested, and these stains are difficult to remove. Their feeding mechanism also cuts the fibres and hence affects the growth of the cotton ball. They caused massive problems in the United States during the industrial boom.

Thanks for looking and greetings to all.

Hi Ram,
Amazing macro shot of this insect captured. Lovely colours and sharp details. Love the pink and green tones, they compliment each other and are so soothing to the eyes. The POV is superb as it details the entire insect. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Are you digging into your archives or are you back in India for summer holidays ?

Hello Ram,
Very nice image, good focus, good details, effective diagonal composition. I also like very much this pastel pink colour of the insect, and the way it contrasts with the background.
Best greetings,
Michal

Hi, dear Ram.
Though this is not one of my favourite bugs I must say that it has beautiful colors. It almost seems painted for an exposition of modern art. I like those legs in black an red.
Excellent macro with a beautiful composition, and good note.
Congratulations and TFS.
Best wishes
Maite

la note est interressante.
merci pour ce partage.

Ram,

Lovely colors and contrast. I love the dots and the pattern on the back that could be mistaken by other birds for a larger insect, similar to the butterflies.
