Friends, let me take you back to August 2006 when I shot some insects and other animals with my Sony P200 at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India.
It is a hill station located at a height of about 7000ft.
Here is a picture of a Robber Fly from that time. I posed another image of it about one and a half year ago. While browsing through my old pictures, I found this image worthy of posting here on TN.

Flies in the Diptera family Asilidae are commonly known as robber flies. The family Asilidae contains about 7,100 described species worldwide. All robber flies have stout, spiny legs, a dense moustache of bristles on the face (mystax), and 3 simple eyes (ocelli) in a characteristic depression between their two large compound eyes. The mystax helps protect the head and face when the fly encounters prey bent on defense. The antennae are short, 3-segmented, sometimes with a bristle-like structure called an arista. The short, strong proboscis is used to stab and inject victims with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied meal through the proboscis. Many species have long, tapering abdomens, sometimes with a sword-like ovipositor. Others are fat-bodied bumble bee mimics. Adult robber flies attack other flies, beetles, butterflies and moths, various bees, dragon and damselflies, ichneumon wasps, grasshoppers, and some spiders.

Hi Ram,
The quality of this macro is outstanding!
I like very much the proper focus and sharpness of the image.
You managed pretty well the light there, and its very good the composition made with the tight crop.
Congratulations and thanks to show it.

Ram;
Perhaps you could let this fly loose on Joey s spiders! Yes your notes confirm what my wife has told me about their appetite..so in a round about way they can be a useful part of the chain...at least for humans..Interesting and quite well detailed both in clarity and in notarions

Hello Ram,
At this pov, it is difficult to tell that this is a robber fly. Sharp focus and well exposed image. TFS this fine image.

WOW!
What a stunning and excellent capture of this strange but beautiful fly!! The details are amazing and sharp. What I like more is the velvety
brown bright on its back, and the curious legs and wings, all so sharp and clear. A splendid and very interesting shot, Ram!
My compliments and TFS
Greetings
Maite

Un buen enfoque y sobre todo una excelente iluminación. Estos dos factores dan como fruto una precisa y clara captura. Buen encuadre.

Hello Ram,
I missed this fine macro of a Robberfly, taken from a great POV not often seen on TN as nearly all are taken from the side. Superb sharpness, composition and contrast with the green leaf.
Well done and thanks,
Ivan

Hello Ram!
I verlooked this robber fly picture before :)
Nice picture presenting a predatory insect with good sharpness and details. It is rather typical in shape as for Asilidae family but it would be nice to know its size :)
I will try to write something more about ID soon.
Best greetings from Lodz,
Radomir
