Friends, today I post a picture of mating bugs I shot in Shimla hills, India, this summer.

I would like to offer a bit of an explanation with my picture today. I am getting increasingly frustrated with the fuss about BG noise which has been driving me into using noise filtering devices like a zombie and losing vital details on the main subject.

This picture I am posting today has a bit of BG noise, but I am NOT going to filter it because I don’t want to smudge the details on the mating bugs. If anyone finds the noise disturbing, please spare me the stereotyped comment because I KNOW THERE IS BG NOISE IN MY PICTURE. If you find the picture uninteresting on that account, please skip it.

My friend Dmitri has suggested that this bug is probably from Pyrrhocoridae family. I have followed his lead and have found that this insect does have a strong resemblance with this family although it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact ID of this particular species since there are a whole lot of sub-species under this family. For the time being, I will restrict my note to the general family only:

PYRRHOCORIDAE

Pyrrhocoridae is a family of insects with more than 300 species world-wide. A common species in parts of Europe is the firebug. They are part of the order Hemiptera which are also known as the 'true bugs'. A few are important crop pests. They are called cotton stainers because their red bodies get crushed along with the cotton they eat when it is harvested, and these stains are difficult to remove. Their feeding mechanism also cuts the fibres and hence affects the growth of the cotton ball. They caused massive problems in the United States during the industrial boom.

Hi Ram,
it's a very good picture with nice colours and good POV.
do not bother about the BG noise, it always be some noise there even if you use a FF-camera. And if you sitting to close to the monitor as a lot of people do, you also will see some noise. It's not easy to use a noise reduce program, in auto-function a lot of the fine details will disapear. Normal noise will not been seen in prints.
Well done.

bonjour RAM
si l'un d'eux veut partir dans un sens et l'autre dans l'autre ils n'avancerons jamaais.
les couleurs sont bonnes,le flash a apporté un peu de lumiere mais juste assez.
bonne netteté.
laurent

Good composition and sharpness.
Nice contrast and good DOF.

Hi Ram,
Again another splendid shot from you.
Nice clear soft colors and POV is superb.
Yhe informative note is very satisfying.
Well done.
Volkan

Hello Ram,

I'd say it's not a shield bug - antennae consist of 4 segments, you could check in a hi-res image if ocelli are present, and if not then these are most probably of Pyrrhocoridae family, maybe an Odontopus sp.

Best regards,
Dmitry

Hi Ram.
You should not to worry in occasion of noise. First, it is insignificant. Secondly, it is possible to remove it only on dark sites of a picture.

The main thing that your picture is very nice, well detailed and composed and captured scene very attractive and natural. My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.

Hello Ram,
I hope that you won't be mad at me but I did a WS to show you how you can remove the noise in the BG only and no, it is not that disturbing ;) I just want to show you, how I work my pictures. This is a nice shot of those two beautiful and colorful insects and I like this composition and great details. This is a nice picture! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Ram,
A superb shot on these mating Sheild bugs. They have a very beautiful color to them. You have captured some really intricate detail here. Spot on exposure. Nice camera work.
Scott

Hi, Ram
Donot bother about noise. People make noise about this after the digital invation.the picture i think is one of your best in Macro, considering the colors, BG and composition. It is a nice capture of these Bugs and the contrast colors are pleasing. But the frame is toooooo big.

Hello Ram!

Very nice catch during intimate moment! Noise - yes - it is very known problem to everyone who has got compact cam :-( I also take many noise photos, but almost never use noise reduction software. I always chose more details and more noise than not noisy but blurred pictures.
Biggest surprise for me here is colour of bugs - they're very pale. Our Fire Bugs are much more red :-)

Nice capture Ram with pretty POV.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, lighting, framing, notes and Claudine's Workshop.

I like it: background, colors.

I don't like it: nothing.

Another interesting composition for your portfolio.
A cordial greeting from Buenos Aires... Ricardo
