PYRRHOCORIDAE

Unfortunately, my last post of these lovey-dovey bugs did not cut much ice with friends on TN, mainly because their faces were hidden behind the foliage from the low perspective I had shot them from.

Though it does not need to be told, I have to constantly dig into my archives to share a picture. For the past four months, I have been doing only that. There is practically NOTHING I can shoot here in Riyadh unless I go to a zoo (for which you have to take prior permission so that you are allocated time slot with single male visitors only. Gender based segregation is a MUST in this country.) The little garden I had within the compound of my residence has gone to dogs; even the weed has withered away and the single fig tree has been pruned to almost ground level by some loony enthusiast! No bugs, no bees this year. What a pity :-( !

So here is another bug-love scene from my archives. I hope you like it this time because the ecstasy is clearly visible on their faces :-)!

These insects belong to Pyrrhocoridae family and are also known as Cotton Stainers in the United States.
Here is a brief note on the family in general:

Pyrrhocoridae is a family of insects with more than 300 species world-wide. A common species in parts of Europe is the firebug. They are part of the order Hemiptera which are also known as the 'true bugs'. A few are important crop pests. They are called cotton stainers because their red bodies get crushed along with the cotton they eat when it is harvested, and these stains are difficult to remove. Their feeding mechanism also cuts the fibres and hence affects the growth of the cotton ball. They caused massive problems in the United States during the industrial boom.

Thanks for looking and my warmest regards to all.

Hi Ram,
Lovely scene. Very good composition of colors. Though, the colors seem a little bit weird (too saturated perhaps?). Focus is exact and good details.

Regards,
Shahar.

Hello Sir,
Did you paint these bugs? :D. They almost looks like painted on leaves. Very good composition exposing backs. Colors looks nice on green leaves. I am not agree with Shaharbv who says colos are too saturated. They are just erfect.Nice Note. And I wish that your garden blosom once again providing you some insects and bugs to shoot. :D

regards
Mahesh

Hi Ram,
Beautifully composed, well detailed shot of these two bugs. I know the feeling about the frustration of getting caught out in a barren, hostile environment. Its quite easy to land yourself in the brig and get your gear confiscated in these parts.

Hi Ram.

Hello Ram,
Very good scene captured here.
I like the POV, focus, exposure and DOF used.
Like also color saturation, well composed and very appropiate the frame used.
Very descriptive the content of your note, it let us know a little more about countries and their realities, besides the bugs behavior.
Congratulations and thanks for share,
JM

Hello Ram,
This shot of bugs in cop. has all the qualities of a first rate picture: the colour contrast and comp., the composition and the presentation.
IF you could have sharpened it one notch it would have been perfect!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Ram,
Brilliant composition showing these two beautiful bugs. Sharp focus and I like the diagonal composition. I think the colours of the bugs are a bit distorted by the flash but even so the colours are striking. Reg. your note I sympathize with you and hope you can soon return to your lovely home country!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Ram,
This is a fine composition!
The macro work is done with skill, the result gives the details we want and look for...
Colours are nicely reproduced, and contrast between subjects and leaf works well!
