I'M A HIMALAYAN BLACK BEAR

Hello people out there on TN!
I am a Himalayan black bear.
I was born 30 years ago along with a brother and a sister in the forest of Choukee in a Himalayan valley at altitude 2500 M.
We tagged on with our mom till we were 2. Then we were on our own.
We were a rather small community in that alpine forest and survived on the sources the forest provided – berries, fruits, honey, tree barks or an occasional mouthful of ants or other insects we managed to grab hold of.
In the autumn when human settlements were rich with maize crops, we quietly made little forays into the villages at night and feasted on the fresh, succulent maize cobs. Human beings were angry with us for messing up with their crops, so they kept vigil over their fields day and night, sitting in their tree houses. Once in a while, one of us unable to keep away from those tempting corn fields succumbed to a bullet the villagers fired at us with their old muskets.
I was trapped when I was about 10. Though I fought tooth and nail, they managed to push me into a caged box. Then I was loaded on one of those noisy machines humans use for travelling long distances. Finally I reached this little place called a zoo where I have spent the last 20 years of my life in this barred space.
I am an old bear now. My eyesight is weak and the hair on my face has turned greyer. I have had a couple of other bears for company from time to time, but I have generally been all to myself most of the time. I was very unhappy in the beginning; slowly, the ennui took over and now I am reconciled to my fate.
The people here feed me indifferently. Sometimes I go hungry for days. Occasionally human kids come here to visit me. Once in a while, some of those kids slip me a banana or some other fruit, which I accept gratefully. Some of them even tease me. But I like those human kids; they are so full of energy they remind me of my own youth in the forest.
A bearded old man came to my enclosure today and set up his little camera on a tripod. I am a sucker for photography so I drew closer to the bars of my space and posed for him. When he was finished, he gave me a biscuit.
I am so old maybe I would be gone by the time you see my picture.
Goodbye, folks.

Hello Ram,
I don't really like to see animals behind bars on TN, but I'd like to add to the sad story. When travelling by coach on the main road from Delhi to Agra we saw at least three people holding these bears by means of a thick chain lead. They were kept to do tricks for visitors in exchange for money. We were many who were really shocked at this.
Best wishes, Ulla

bonjour ram
oseriez vous faire un portrait comme celui-la sans la grille?????
moi non!
la netteté est parfaite.
bien fait.

Hi Ram.
Thank your friend Bear for such interesting story. He is old, wise and has that than he can share with us. Amazing close-up: great quality, expressive framing, cropping and composition. Wonderful reflection of his mood. Bravo, my friend. Excellent work.
Alexei.

Hello sir,
liked the photo, loved the story even more. a very sharp shot. you 've captured a nice expression. wish u had one of your better cameras so that you could focus on the eyes to reallly bring out its soulful look. its cruelty to cage these animals like this and not to feed them-it's a shame on mankind.
we too have a mini zoo near my home and it pains us to see them half starved . so every time we go there we take bananas and peanuts to feed the monkeys, spotted and sambar deers. recently govt has taken to release the majority of them in Malayattoor forest area. isn't it nice?

Hi Ram,
Your picture doesn't go out of my mind.I had seen it yesterday, but I had to think about it first, before making a comment on it. This bear has such an attaching expression, without any hate. Your story is excellent, like always. The old man is not so old and seems to be still very activ! Thanks
Best regards
Anne

Hi Ram,

like many I'm not keen on captivity, but once again this is beautifully captured and tells quite a story. That D200 is working well with you, my wife loves hers too!
Keep it up.

Hello Ram !
I always feel sad when I see a caged animal, and your note made me feel even more sad - your words really touched me. I love the expression on the bear's face, and I also like all the details - articularly on the nose and the claws. Very well done !
valerie.

This is a really evocative and poignant commentary you have penned, Ram, and a great complimentary portrait to match those words. Well done, my friend.
Jeff
