PYRRHOCORIDAE
Cotton Stainers

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Hemiptera
Suborder: Heteroptera
Infraorder: Pentatomomorpha
Superfamily: Pyrrhocoroidea
Family: Pyrrhocoridae

Pyrrhocoridae is a family of insects with more than 300 species world-wide. A common species in parts of Europe is the firebug. They are part of the order Hemiptera which are also known as the 'true bugs'.

A few are important crop pests. They are called cotton stainers because their red bodies get crushed along with the cotton they eat when it is harvested, and these stains are difficult to remove. Their feeding mechanism also cuts the fibres and hence affects the growth of the cotton ball. They caused massive problems in the United States during the industrial boom.

Hello Ram,
Fine capture of an attractive pest. This is sharp, colourful and well composed.
One wonders if this bug is an accidental import to India, or did the reverse happen to the States.
TFs and keep well,
Ivan

Hello Ram,
Amazing macro of this bug showing sharp details. Strange pink colour though! I've never seen one with red legs and blue spots! Must be an Asian species? There must remain a lot of research to be done on Indian bugs!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Ram,
strange colours for this bug, I like it.
It's always amazing how many forms and colours the can have. I saw one with a design like a cat's face on the backside, had it here some months ago. Thanks and greetings

Hola Ram,
Buena captura con excelete nitidez donde se aprecian bien los detalles, los colores son muy bellos. Saludos

Hi Ram,
it's unusal POV but it's nice.
The colours is very nice, The DOF is a bit shallow, a smaller apertur have get the entire insect(antennea) in focus.
I find the picture slightly bright too.
Well done.

Stunning details on this little creature! For all that it is a "pest" it is still an attractive little character.
Superb POV and composition

Hi Ram.
Excellent macro shot with great POV and details. I like your strong horizontal cropping so much. Only color, it seems to me, are too cold. My best regards and TFS.

Hi Ram,
Wonderful macro. Such brilliant colours and sharpness makes it easy and pleasant on the eyes. Although, I think a bigger F value would have had the entire insect on focus. In any case, another superb shot from your collection. I just love those eyes on its back...... Kudos.
TFS.

bonjour ram
les couleurs sont vraiment tres vives!
cet insecte est un peu envahissant dans les jardins mais vous en avez tiré quelque chose d'interressant.
bien vu.
laurent

super colours here and quite natural..
how these insects got their markings and colour is a miracle..they couldnt have 'thought' them on and yet there they are just in the right place for the viewing predator...miraculous!!
good sharp shot and well composed..no space wasted
cheers
