[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Striated Swallow (Hirundo striolata) is a species of swallow found in open, often hilly areas, clearings and cultivation in South and Southeast Asia from northeastern India and Taiwan south to Timor. It is sometimes placed in the genus Cecropsis as Cecropsis striolata.

Striated Swallow was formerly sometimes considered to a subspecies of Red-rumped Swallow.

Description
Striated Swallow is 19 cm long with a deeply forked tail. It has blue upperparts other than a reddish collar (sometimes absent) and streaked chestnut rump. The face and underparts are white with heavy dark streaking. The wing are brown. The sexes are alike but juveniles are duller and browner, with a paler rump and shorter outer tail feathers.

There are five races

H. s. striolata breeds in Taiwan, The Philippines and Indonesia.
H. s. mayri breeds from northeastern India to northwestern Myanmar. It has broader streaks than nominate striolata.
H. s. stanfordi breeds from northeastern Myanmar to northern Thailand. It has broad streaks.
H. s. vernayi breeds locally in western Thailand. It is more rufous below than the nominate race, and is only faintly streaked on the rump.
H. s. badia breeds on the Malay Peninsula. It has faintly streaked deep rufous underparts, and an unstreaked rump. It is sometimes raised to species status as the Rufous-bellied Swallow, Hirundo badia or Cecropsis badia.
The contact call is pin, the alarm is chi-chi-chi, and the song is a soft twittering.

This species, particularly subspecies mayri is very similar to Red-rumped Swallow of the race japonicus, but is larger, more heavily streaked, and has a less distinct neck collar.

Behaviour

Migration
The island subspecies and badia are essentially resident, but the continental races mayri and stanfordi are partial migrants which move south in the winter.


Breeding
The Striated Swallow breeds from April to July alone or semi-colonially with scattered nests. The nest is a retort or bottle shaped structure, made from mud pellets and lined with dried grasses and feathers. The clutch is usually four, sometimes five, white eggs except for badia, where two eggs is normal. Both sexes build the nest, and share incubation and the care of the young.

Nests are constructed in natural caves, but very often in artificial sites on bridges, in culverts and on buildings.


Feeding
The Striated Swallow feeds low over the ground or at cliff faces on flying insects. It has a slow buoyant flight compared to Barn Swallow. It will feed with other swallow species.

Except for a bit of noise in the BG, the image of the Swallow is of good quality, Goldy.
I can make out from the bird's shadow on the rock that you shot this picture at around mid day. The shadow of the head on the upper plumage also suggests that.
However, you have dealt with the bright light conditions well through aperture value 8.
The details and colours on the subject are very good.
Overall, it is a very nice image of this bird not seen that frequently.

Hallo Goldy
I like this image very much. A swallow is one of my favourite birds and you have managed to capture this one in a perfect close up pose. I like the back view showing us the perfect shape and colours of its plumage. It looks like it is wearing a butler’s suite. I also like the way it is looking back at you as if it want to ask: "Is this pose ok? Or should I turn a little more sideways. You really have outdone yourself on this one, and I like it a lot. The only thing I do not like is your background and I cannot really pin point why. It is as if there is a lot of noise in the background, and the bright green distracts the eye of the real subject. It is never the less a special image, because I have never had the oppertunity to photograph a swallow so close and in such a pose, as they are busy bodies and have lots of energy. Thanks for sharing.

Ahhhh..now I see... I have Picasa and sometimes use it...some images are almost perfect. So I do it in Picasa and then do a screen capture with paintshop Pro. After than I check filtering and add or subtract noise..which is what I will do with this one if you don't mindf...as it is indeed a fine image of this aviary!

A beautiful Swallow - one that I have not seen before. The colors are wonderful - especially that almost royal blue. A lovely pose and a perfect shadow. The noise is a bit distracting but even so the bird jumps out from the background.

I always like to watch pictures that are not usual from a member. Your imaging style with the unique sharpening technique you use with the picture of this colorful bird together make a bird shot that is very different from other bird shots! I prefer to see something new all the time, especially when new is equal to something wonderful like this! TFS!

This is a very nice image of this lovely Swallow.
Beautiful colors in the feathers and pose of the bird.
Love the color contrast, feather details and the shadow of the bird on the rock.
Very good sharpness and exposure, but in my opinion the nois distracts a little.
Nevertheless a very nice shot and very good note also. TFS!!!
I think Bob "egshannon" dit a very good job on the reduction of that noise.
