ROCK DWELLER
Bradinopyga geminata (Rambur, 1842)

I shot this dragonfly at Pathankot in Punjab while I was on my way to my native Himachal Pradesh. There were scores of them, flying around vigorously at sunset and perching on the walls of the resort I was staying in from time to time. I guess that is why they are called Rock Dwellers!
It took me a lot of hard work to identify this species of Odonata.
Eventually I succeeded in identifying its name and the genus it belongs to. It is a Skimmer dragonfly and on a fairly intensive web page dealing with Asian dragonflies, I found that it is found mostly in India and some other South Asian countries. It belongs to the Libellulidae family.

Here is a general note on this family borrowed from Wikipedia:
The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does), there still remains a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution, these are almost certainly the most often seen of all dragonflies.
The genus Libellula is mostly New World, but also boasts one of the few endangered odonates from Japan - Libellula angelina. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The related genus Plathemis includes the whitetails. The genus Celithemis contains several brightly marked species in the southern United States. Members of the genus Sympetrum are called darters (or meadowhawks in North America), and are found throughout most of the world, except Australia. Several Southern Hemisphere species in the genera Trithemis and Zenithoptera are especially beautiful. Other common genera include Tramea and Pantala.
The libellulids have stout-bodied larvae with the lower lip or labium developed into a mask over the lower part of the face.

I like your presentation of beautiful and very interesting dragonfly. Good sharpnes, nice simple composition. Wings are not clearly visible but it is typical situation with that kind of dragonflies shots. Maybe you could reduce the highlights a little bit. I like it very much

Strange name for a dragonfly but you don't always find them by water as one might expect.
Excellent capture in good light showing sharp details and fine colours.
