Trithemis kirbyi

This is my first picture of this species of dragonflies I came across recently.
From the moment my eyes fell on it, I knew it was not my usual Scarlet Skimmer because the strong orange pigment on its wings near the thorax and the colour of the markings on the wingtips made it a different species altogether.
My research has now clearly established its identity: It is a Trithemis kirbyi.
The insect kept perching on the rocks in the garden and I could not goad it into perching elsewhere, preferably on a leaf.
The stone I finally shot it on was almost white in colour. That is why the white BG.
Hope you like it.

Here is a note on it borrowed from Wikipedia:

Trithemis kirbyi is a species of dragonfly in family Libellulidae. It is found in Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Chad, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and possibly Burundi. It is also common in southern Europe, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean Islands and South Asia - India.
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, dry savanna, moist savanna, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, rivers, and inland karsts.

Hi Ram,
a amazing picture with lovely colours and very good POV.
The shallow DOF really help the dragonfly standout nicely from the BG. The sharpness and exposure are spot on.
Excellent work.
Regards Siggi

Hello Ram,
A fine capture of this striking red species of Dragonfly, Trithemis kirbyi.
The composition, POV and contrasting BG are classic and this, together with the sharpness, contribute to a fine portrait of the species.
TFS this delight,
Best wishes, Ivan

Splendida macro, bellissimo taglio compositivo con un BG chiaro che esalta i vividi colori di questa libellula, ottima esposizione con una buona resa cromatica dei colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Sir Ram, wonderful capture of this dragonlfy. TFS. Regards
Mehmet

This one has a neon type of glow to it, although I am sure it is only the way you have presented. Highly regarded in India yes? And as is the colour as well? This may be one of the few if any I have seen in this part of the family. Very nicely presented.
Bob

Hi Ram

Once again a very skillful capture - great framing with sharp detail and great colour. Well seen and captured.

James

Hallo Ram
Thanks for posting this image. I have captured something similar and Loot thinks it is the identical of yours. I found it interesting reading your notes of this guy that returned to the rock surface all the time. Mine did exactly the same.

The colour of this dragonfly is just amazing. It is really bright and vivid and has a different attraction to it than most of the other dragonflies I have come across. To me the colour creates a feeling of bossiness. Why I have this feeling I do not know, but in a sense it is very overwhelming. The details displayed are very prominent and clearly visible.

It really is a pity that the background is a bit pale because I think this would have been even a better display of beauty than it is already, if the background had some kind of colour. But I face the same problem when I decide to post my image some time in the future.
Kind regards
Anna
