[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last year, we had plenty of Hoverflies in the garden.
I shot these two a split second after their mating.
The upper one is the male Eristalinus sepulchralis who settle on the leaf soon after dismounting the female below. The guy looked dazed for a moment and I shot it in that state :).

Order: Diptera
Family: Syrphidae
Genus: Eristalinus
Species: sepulchralis

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as Hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.
As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring on flowers. The adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year; hence aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for beneficial use in biological control. Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.
About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

Very nice macro Ram.
Great to catch the male and the female of this species of hoverfly on the same image, both being well in focus, well composed on the leaf and taken in fine lighting.
Another beauty from your archives and thanks for posting it,
All the best,
Ivan

hello Ram
great composition with good sharpness and details
beautiful colours
greeting lou

wow! Grt sharpness, grt frame,

Hallo Ram
I am currently running a tight schedule and do not have time for a proper critique, but I could not let the opportunity pass to leave a few comical words at your posting. They surely look exhausted after the mating session and even the wings show no signs of live. Ha-ha I hope you know that I was only joking. The shiny colour and detail of the body are brought out beautifully in your image. Thanks for sharing and although words are few, appreciation is plenty. Best regards.
Anna

Hello Ram
As usual a great macro photo but it seems that your two subjects are exhausted !!! and especially the male !!!

Hello Ram !
It's always nice to see male and female of the same species on a pictures, like here, specially when the picture is as good as this one - you have really frozen the two exhausted insects very nicely. The details, the composition and the POV are great, the tender green of the leaf is wonderful, and the Hoverfly in themselves are beautiful, I like their markings. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hello Ram
great shot from your archive,
a very nice species of hoverflies taken from a great POV, i like the full sunshine on the insects and the leaf, beautiful dorsal view and superb sharp details
Have a good night

I really need some lessons in identification....as a matter of fact I need an face to face class on it...Drones and hovers and wasps and bees and all that...I rarely ID them correctly and sometimes even you and Ivan will say differently...but this one you know and have done well...I am marking it in my own computer for future reference in ID'ing!
Bob

Hello Ram,
You show a very pleasant composition and to read about the story makes the shot even more interesting. These hoverflies are really special looking with their spotted eyes and the stripes on the thorax. The shape of the leaf is giving a more graphical aspect to the whole. Do you have less insects in your garden this year?
I also would like to thank you for your kind critique on my last picture.
Take care.
Amitiés
Anne

Hi Ram,
nicely captured in great light and lovely green leaf as a clear background.
Sharp details well recorded and nicely positioned subjects.
Such a good view to note.
