I went in search of this most beautiful Mountain Bird, in Munsiari, Uttaranchal state. I climbed 14,000ft and set up a tent over night. Early morning started trekking at 4 a.m. and came across these birds at 7a.m. There was lot of mist, when i found this bird. For my 100-300mm with 1.4X converter, i could manage this much. I wanted to show the environment it lives and composed the boulder also.

The Himalayan Monal, Lophophorus impejanus also known as the Impeyan Monal or Impeyan Pheasant is a bird of genus Lophophorus of the Pheasant family, Phasianidae. It is the National bird of Nepal, where it is known as the Danfe, and the state bird of Uttarakhand.

Recently, survey carried out in Arunachal Pradesh discovered a new type of Lophophorus species and its identity, though believed to be a subspecies of Sclater's Monal or a potential new species, is yet to be confirmed. There is, so far, no confirmed record of subspecies in the Himalayan Monal.

However, recent studies have shown that the male Himalayan Monals of northwestern India lack the white rump that many Himalayan Monals have, and have more green on the breast, indicating the possibility of a second subspecies (wikipedia)

Hi Satish, very nice perspectiver and colours,my best compliments,Luciano

wow, amazing bird, TFS Ori

hello chikappa,

One has to see it real close to see the real vivid color it has. One cannot even come near to justify the colors with any camera. Though ICUN puts it under least concern it is one tough bird to find. I hope shri Ram Thakur will be happy to see this pic.
