The Himalayan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus or Selenarctos thibetanus) is greatly in need of conservation due to a high babies mortality rate and extensive hunting {(IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Animals}. It has sharp-claws and a distinctive white or cream "V" marking on its chest. It is a close relative of the American black bear.

This species occurs throughout Himalayan belt and is most populous in the mountainous country and jungle. It is nocturnal or crepuscular (active during twilight) and spends daytime sleeping in rock caves or tree hollows.

In the summer they live largely on wild fruit and berries and raid orchards for pears, apricots and nuts.

The bear has been known to be quite aggressive towards human beings.
