Hi,
This is a dedication to Howard (marhowie) to say “Hey Howard…You Rock!!!!……He whose work I have admired and learnt a lot from. I remember last year sometime when Howard mentioned his leaving TN and I can tell you I was easily one of those distraught souls worrying about his leaving…..

Thank you Howard! ... for deciding to stick around and delighting us with your wonderful captures. We look forward to many more.
***************************************************
The picture is of a Brahminy Myna (or "Mynah") or Brahminy Starling (Sturnus pagodarum) is a member of the starling family of birds. It is a resident breeder in eastern Afghanistan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka.

The adults of these 21cm-long birds have grey upperparts and reddish-orange underparts and black wing quills. The head has a black crown, nape and crest, and the underneath of the tail is white. The bill and the strong legs are bright yellow, and there are yellow wattles on the gape. The recumbent crest may be fluffed up when the bird is excited. The sexes are similar; young birds have crestless sooty brown head and dull general coloration.

The bird is popularly known as a myna - Salim Ali (1995) describes it as a "typical myna" in its behaviour and appearance -, whereas more recently (e.g. Grimmett et al. 1999) the term "starling" is preferred. The truth is far more complex however: Mynas are not a natural, monophyletic group, but a name for a number of unrelated South Asian starlings. The present species appears to be neatly intermediate between the "true" or typical mynas (genus Acridotheres) and some of the birds unequivocally termed "starlings".

This passerine is typically found in dry forest and scrub jungle. Like most starlings, the Brahminy Starling is fairly omnivorous, eating fruit and insects. It builds a nest in holes. The normal clutch is 3-4 eggs.

I have always been fascinated by the ”cool” hairstyle this bird sports and the blue on its beak and those eyes always are a joy to watch. I hope you enjoy looking at this shot as much as I did taking it.
******************************************************

Some issues regarding the capture :
-----------------------------------------
As all of you would have noticed I do not shoot with a DSLR. I don’t know if it is as a result of this, I have often found that on pictures done at grass level it is quite difficult do PP work. In fact even the shortest distance can look “noisy” when images are downloaded. In these pictures using Neat Image can make the whole composition look more terrible. I have had to clone a bit of grass around here as a result of this problem. Is this a common issue? Are there any solutions to handle the camera to address the problems? Comments and suggestion are welcome.

Thanks for looking in.
Cheers

Hello Iris,
A remarkable capture of a Brahminy Minah. This is sharp as any DSLR, though it would interesting to see the org. for comparison. I clone away items that would otherwise spoil the composition but I try to minimise this and do it in such a way as to avoid repetition, though this does not spoil the image here.
The pose, contrast with the green grass are what make the imgage excellent and a fine tribute to our top photgrapher and TN friend, Howard Cheek.
TFS and best wishes,
Ivan

Hi Silpa

A wonderful dedication to one of TrekNature's stalwarts and pillars. Meaning: leader, mainstay, support, guide, teacher, friend, tower-of-strength, committed, unfaltering, steadfast, resolute, courageous, bold (in more ways than one), and master. Very few of us on this site (and probably even many non-members who visit the site) have remained untouched by Howard. In some way or another he has moved and affected us all and made deep impressions through his amazing work, his friendship, his coaching, and his humility. I am sure he will appreciate this wonderful gesture.

This Brahminy myna is superb in its pose and somehow it reminds me a lot of Howard. The bird has just got much more feathers on its head (chuckle). Lovely sharp details and stunning colours. The composition is good, but there are probably some alternative options that were possible. However, taking note of your last paragraph I don't know how much you had to crop or how big the bird was on the original image. Making use of a vertical composition with slightly less grass in front of the bird and thus displaying a larger bird in the frame is one such option, but again, I don't know if the original would have sustained such display. Anyway, I think it looks great with the green grass making the myna stand out and placing all the focus on the bird. The exposure levels were spot-on ensuring excellent lighting on the subject.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Iris,
Amazing action caught at its peak. I really wonder how you managed with the P&S camera !! TFS, Regards
Anil

Hello Iris,
This is superb shot and good framing. But the bird is too cornered. Just an opinion. Lovely clarity and sharp Ganesh

Hello Iris,

Very nice capture of this bird. Very good composition with an excellent timing. Excellent sharpness. Great colours. I think we see too much the "clonage" here. Generally I have a look to the picture before reading the note. And I saw you cloned immediately. That is a personnal point of view: I do not like too modify the pictures too much, a picture is good or not. Anyway, the picture of the bird is excellent.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Silpa, What a cute bird which I have not seen before. Your capture is excellent in all way my friend! Also worthy dedication to Howard. TFS. Cheers,
Bayram

hi Iris,
well captured....I have intention of to do them immediately a record contract!!!

best regards sERGIO

Good Morning Iris and thank you for your kindness.
I always wanted to be a rock star ;-}
Cool pose seen in your "punk" rocker - I like this alot.
Very good details, colors, exposure, and DOF..
It's an interesting comp with plenty of space for this rocker to "rock" out in :)
Well done & Thanx again,
Howard
PS - To try & answer your ?
It's the nature of the small sensor in a your point & shoot to produce more noise, especially when it sees so much green..I think it's the same for the blue pixels also..But I'm no expert :)
My only suggestion is to always shoot at the lowest ISO setting, for the least amount of noise :/

Hi Iris,

I love it!!!! The pose of this Mynah and the look on his face is priceless. The opened beak and the long plummage are wonderful. Excellent colors that looks so good against the green grass. Nice dedication to Howard who consistently presents amazing photos.

Jane

Hello Iris
First of all the Title is superb and a fitting dedication to Howard.
Secondly I love the framing..Many may say there is to much space to the left...But I think its just about right..All it lacks is an audience!!
The subject is superbly sharp and captured just at the right moment as he lets rip!!
Fantastic work and Thanks for sharing this superb Picture.
All the Best

Hi Iris

Great capture of the Brahminy Minah.
I like the composition with a good POV and a superb singing pose.
Very nice Feather details.
Lovely natural well saturated colours too.

Hil

Hi Iris,
Yes you are right. But it is not always true about the noise with sufficient light. Anyway a lovely capture of this rock star mayna. Superb details and a lovely composition. Very well done. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Primero gracias por tus comentarios. Tu toma es excelente, casi espectacular como muchas de las fotografías de tu galería. Un buen control de la luz, naturalidad en los colores y destacando un buen encuadre. Una toma preciosa de un ave desconocida para mí.
Saludos Iris: Josep Ignasi Tejedor.

Iris - I agree with you - howard is special! although I didn't picture him with that sort of haircut!!
Nice capture - the eyes look like they are bulging through the effort!
thanks for your critique and thanks for sharing... mark

Hi Iris
Hey, this guy is super! Lovely colours and wonderfully contrasted against the lush green grass. Well done and TFS
Cheers
Sue

Hi Iris, splendid bird with wonderful colors and superb sharpness, perfect focus and fantastic details, very well done, have a good week, ciao Silvio

Hi Iris,
NeatImage does flatten out details but in your case here, it has not done much damage. The image is excellent, in fact.
How come I do not see this species (Brahminy Mynah) around here not too far from Delhi?
It is a good looking bird and you have captured it in an interesting pose. The colours are very charming.
TFS and keep shooting.

Hi Silpa,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful Brahminy Myna singing aloud for everyone here on TN. Immaculate sharpness, colours and details on its plumage with perfect lighting and exposure. Among the green grasses it stands out nicely. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Cheers Iris,
I have NEVER EVER SEEN THIS BEAUTY until today.
I wonder if it can mimick human speech as the common Indian Mynah does???
Congratulations my friend.
GREAT PIECE OF PHTOGRAPHY WORK.
Mario with warm regards.

Awesome capture! I love the colours, the crispness, the excellent composition and the wee bird's attitude! Well done and TFS.

Hello Silpa,
An awesome capture with great humour. Minimalistic yet very effective composition, and the bird's pose is something really fitting to the great title. :) Absolutely top notch photo (maybe except for the black sign, but it's a very minor trouble, and a question of personal taste), congrats and tfs. Great dedication.
