[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I posted a picture of bees a few hours ago in memory of the bees that had visited me in Riyadh in the summer of 2006 and had given me joy as well as some points on TN :).
Now I post my main picture for today -- a Plain Tiger for my friend kv vral who is a talented nature photographer but very modest. Today he posted a wonderful picture of a Striped Tiger -- a close cousin of my subject Plain Tiger.
Plain Tiger is my favourite butterfly. It is a butterfly that I saw occasionally in winters too. However, I am posting its picture after many months, essentially because of the fact that I over-did it last year :-).
I shot this picture during my visit to Okhla Bird Park on June 1. Hope you like it.

The Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) or - outside Asia - African Monarch, is a common butterfly which is widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the danaine ("Crows and Tigers") subfamily of the brushfooted butterfly family Nymphalidae.

It is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500 year old Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest illustration of this species.

The Plain Tiger can be considered the archetypical danaine of India. Accordingly, this species has been studied with in greater detail than other members of its subfamily occurring in India.

DESCRIPTION

The Plain Tiger is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 7–8 cm. The body is black with many white spots. The wings are tawny the upper side being brighter and richer than the underside. The apical half of the fore wing is black with a white band. The hind wing has 3 black spots around the centre. The hind wing has a thin border of black enclosing a series of semi-circular white spots.

Background color and extent of white on the forewings varies somewhat across the wide range...

The male Plain Tiger is smaller than the female, but more brightly coloured. In addition, male danaines have a number of secondary sexual characteristics. In the case of the Plain Tiger, these are:

The male has a pouch on the hind-wing. This spot is white with a thick black border and bulges slightly. It is a cluster of specialised scent scales used to attract females.
The males possess two brush-like organs which can be pushed out of the tip of the abdomen.

DISTRIBUTION

The range of the Plain Tiger extends from Africa and southern Europe, eastwards via Sri Lanka, India, and Myanmar to China and Sulawesi. It is a very common species.

Hello Sir,

Thanks a lot for your appreciation and inspiring gesture of dedicating this beauty, your favorite, for me.

What a composition and color you've presented here of this Plain tiger. The light and tones remind me of Rembrandt's canvas. DOF and POV are wonderful.

Hi Ram Thakur,

Someone had alread mentioned "Bold & Beatuifull" its the apt title for this too I suppose, I would have really loved little more space all around, evemn thou it macro image, well its my view. TFS.

Ha ha, this one looks familiar Ram

Yes, its the Indian version of the same species I posted a while ago. We call it lesser wanderer, but I think plain tiger is a better name.
I can see subtle differences in the out forewing pattern, but you have to look hard. Great shot anyway my friend. Excellent sharpness as usual and good composition. A beauty by any name.

Hola Ram,
Precioso ejemplar el que nos muestras en una bonita composición de esta bella mariposa. Buena nitidez y riqueza de detalles, con luz, color y fondo agradables. Saludos
José Ramón

A dedication from you,Sir, is something which would mean a lot to anyone, as it would, I'm sure, to your friend,as well!
What i really like about this shot is the lighting, I wonder what you call it technically, but that glow in the shadows you've captured, is simplysuperb! It almost looks like a spotlight, and brigns out the delicate details of this insect very well, indeed!

Hello Ram!

This is probably most beautifull Indian specie of butterfly. Good POV with one wing almost invisible and other with full sharpness and colours. BG is nicely blurred, compositon also is very good.
