Sida rhombifolia.
Synonym: Malva rhombifolia.
Common names: Angled Sida, Arrowleaf Sida.
Common Hindi name: Atibala.
Plant: 50-120cm. Small gregarious shrub.
Leaves: Dark green, diamond-shaped, arranged alternately along the stem, 4-8cm long.
Flower: Moderately delicate. Flowers occur singly on flower stalks(peduncles) that arise from the area between the stems and leaf petioles. They consist of five petals that are 4-8mm long, creamy to orange-yellow in color. Flowers open by mid-day.
Fruit: Ribbed capsule, which breaks up into 8-10 segments.
Native to the New World tropics and subtropics, distributed throughout India and Nepal.
Atibala's leaves and roots are used in piles, gonorrhoea and in rheumatism. Mucilage that is present in its stem is used as demulcent and emollient.
