Indian Robin

I am not much of a bird expert, so it took me considerable time to identify it. However, Rathika's portfolio did prove helpful because she is an expert on birds, especially those found in north India.
I shot this male bird during my visit to Gurgaon in June. I took this shot against the sky -- not of the blue kind we see in Jane's bird pictures. In the late afternoon of an Indian summer day, the sky is almost grey.

Here is a note from Wikipedia:

The Indian Robin, Saxicoloides fulicata, is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher, family Muscicapidae. It, and similar small species, are often called chats.

The Indian Robin is an insectivorous species which is a resident breeder in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. It is found in scrub jungle and other open habitats including around habitation. It nests in a hole in a wall, tree-stump or bank, laying 2-3 creamy white eggs on a pad of grass lined with feathers or hair. Only the female incubates the eggs.

This species is 19cm long, including the long cocked tail. It is similar in shape to the smaller European Robin, but is longer-tailed.

The male of the race found in southern India and Sri Lanka, S. f. fulicata, is completely glossy black apart from a white shoulder patch and a reddish lower belly. Males of the northern race S. f. cambaiensis have a grey back and crown. Females are dark grey above and paler below.

This is a common and tame bird. It is terrestrial, hopping along the ground with cocked tail. The male sings a few melodic notes during courtship.

Hello Ram,
An excellent capture of a male Indian Robin, where you have managed a POV from beneath it on the cable that shows all the ID features of the species.
Excellent sharpness and composition too.
TFS this beauty,
Best regards,
Ivan

Hello Ram,
I've never heard of an Indian Robin but this is a real beauty in its black/brown/white colours. Great focus on the eye and sharp details too. A fine composition showing it in a typical 'Robin-pose' with its tail up!
Many thanks and kind regards, Ulla

Wow! What a capture Ram; I would have never thought of a black robin. now I shall have to go get my Indian book or one of two I have thanks to another from India...and see if I can find it as well...your birds tend towards that cable perch. They must be all over the place..the cables not the birds...

Hi Ram,

I am so glad you posted this. I have one just like it from India and never found the correct identification. The face does have the look of the American Robin but the colors threw me off. My shot has a white sky too :-) Good details and a wonderful pose on the wires.
