| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
It was overcast in the morning and I spent about 30min to allow them to get accustomed to my presence. Due to low light conditions I had to wait when the Sun took a peek behind the clouds to make full use of light. I wish I could use a CPL with my 100mm Macro to achieve better highlights and reduce reflection.
After several failed attempts for about 45min I managed to get this close ONLY. Just FYI the shutter speed was 1/1000 and still I could not freeze the wings properly. Being relatively large insects, bees would be expected to beat their wings rather slowly, and to sweep them across the same wide arc as other flying bugs (whose wings cover nearly half a circle). They do neither. Their wings beat over a short arc of about 90 degrees, but ridiculously fast, at around 230 beats per second. Mosquitoes do at 400 beats/s. Still quite a mystery how they stay aloft.
After spending about 1 and half hours with them I decided to call it a day and concentrate on butterflies. :-) |
