Indian Whiskered Tern, Chlidonias hybridus is a seabird of the tern family Sternidae. It is white below and grey above in colour. In juvenile and also in adults during winter, the crown is flecked with white.Otherwise the crown is uniformly black. In summer black cap and black belly is conspicuous. The tail is shorter and almost square cut.
The Indian whiskered tern breeds in Kashmir , Gangetic planes, Assam and Bangladesh. in winter it is seen throughout the subcontinent. It frequents our place during this time of the year in fleet of about 100 birds.
this year also there were 100s of them hovering oover the ploughed fields looking for worms, frogs and other aquatic forms. They fly gracefully over the fields, bill and eye directed intently below for signs of life. Once the target is found it plunges into the water and bears them away in its stride. I have rarely seen it on ground looking for food. Once the food is caught, they devour it in mid air. Although they have webbed feet, they rarely alight on the water. When not hunting they rest on a rock or mudbank in group.
This picture is my attempt at capturing the Tern in flight. It was hovering over the water looking for food when I took this shot with Nikon D200/ Nikor 300mm f4 +1.4 TC, handheld.
The image was later slightly cropped to avoid the head of an egret standing below, noise removed with Neat image and resized for TN.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your valued critiques.

I would like to thank Loot for the excellent Workshop he has done on this photo. It's an excellent study in PP and how these tools in Photoshop can be used to enhance the beauty of the pictures. Thanks Loot!

Beautifully done - wonderful shape on the bird, great detail in the color white which is never easy...awesome!

Hi Smitha,
This is a very good action shot!
I like very much the moment and flight frozen here, it's a very difficult shoot and you managed to do it with excellent results.
Details caught are so clear, and the pose with the full extended wings let us admire is plumage.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Smitha,
Nice action shot. I liked the pose you captured of this Indian whiskered tern, wings look beautiful. Lovely warm color tones. TFS
Best wishes,
Selen

Regretfully, I have missed a great deal of your quality work in the past couple of months, Smitha.
Anyway, thanks for writing your kind critique on the trio of butterflies I posted today.

This is an excellent capture of a white bird in flight. I have yet to shoot a bird in flight. In fact, I am not good at bird pictures at all. It requires great technical skills to shoot a bird in flight and you have done it admirably well.
Thanks for sharing and warm regards.

Hi Smitha,
This is an excellent shot and you have freezed it exceptionally well in this gorgeous pose. Superb light management and exposure on the white plumage which is immensely difficult, atleast I find it hard. The blurred BG looks natural and special and provides a contrasting base for the Tern to stand out perfectly well. Great POV to capture and portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Smitha
I like the composition and moment here. Littlw softness on tips of wings creates a special effect. Great OOF background. Sharpness on birds body could be a litlle bit better
I like it very much

Hello Smitha,
Beautiful in-flight capture of the Whiskered Tern in non-breeding plumage. Great timing with the wing position and fine sharpness against a contrasting bokeh that sets it off very well in a pleasing composition.
Well done and thanks for sharing this as well as your kind words on my 300th!
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Smitha

As I said earlier, I had to skedaddle to work and did not have time to do a proper critique, but as you can see I made it back. I have never seen this specific tern before so thanks for introducing it to me. Actually (after some searching on the site) I found this bird to be no stranger to TrekNature as there are at least 7 other postings of it, but somehow I've never noticed it before or maybe it is just a case of my memory getting shorter (chuckle).

I just love this shot of the Indian tern and I can understand why Annick referred to an "Angel pose". The snow white bird produced a remarkable contrast against the darkish BG. You've captured the shot just at the right moment and managed excellently to freeze those outstretched wings while there is still a wee bit of movement visible on the tips of the wings. It sure gave the photo a lot of visual appeal. The cropping was well executed – tightish at the top and with the extra free space at the bottom. The colour rendition is fine and there is ample detail visible. However, I thought the photo could do with a pinch of darkening to bring out even more detail on the white plumage. Therefore I've prepared a rather quick workshop, but remember it is just another view and no attempt to manipulate your excellent posting.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Thanks so much for the excellent critiques on my last two postings.

Hallo Smitha
You managed to capture a wonderful pose being at the right place at the right time. The sharpness is just right, the colours vibrant and so many details to appreciate. Exposure, framing and focus are spot-on. Looking at the workshop Loot has done make me appreciate this bird even more. The details are just stunning. The white plumage looks so clean and pure, and creates a feeling of purity. The wide open wings form a awareness of protection and calmness. Congratulations for this magnificent pose. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
