House Fly - Musca domestica

Hello Friends,
Though truly the “Bearer of Maladies”, Thanks to TN, I found that the House Fly is a beautiful and charming creation to photograph.

Features:
WINGS: 2 - membranous. Swift strong flyers (up to 30 mph.) with wing beats of up to 1000 times per second.
Hind wings are not developed and are reduced to 2 short slender threads with a knob at the end (may be used for balancing).

METAMORPHOSIS: Complete (egg, larva, pupa, adult). Maggots are usually small, white legless worms without an obvious head.

MOUTH: hooked for piercing, they lap liquid (Sponging).

FEATURES: Soft-bodied insect. Head, thorax and abdomen are very distinct. Thorax is generally quite small. The head is dominated by two enormous compound eyes and the legs are clawed. Antennae are small.

Easily seen around homes, these are capable of carrying over 100 pathogens, such as typhoid, cholera, Salmonella, bacillary dysentery, tuberculosis, anthrax, ophthalmia, and parasitic worms.. Some strains have become immune to common insecticides even.

At the base of each leg there is a cushion-like structure covered with granular hairs.A sticky secretion which excretes from the granular hairs gathers bacteria and other micro organisms which stick to the legs. In order to clean its body and the legs, houseflies rub their legs together. It is estimated that whenever a housefly rubs its legs, lakhs of bacteria are discharged from the legs for each rubbing.

Thank you for stopping by!!!!!!!

Hi Irishues,

What a lovely shot, I really like your simple but very effective composition and its a great pose and POV too, good detail and the vivid colours are superb.

TFS Hilary :o)

Hi Irishues, while I'm not a fan of the housefly, you have found a way to make one look good. The composition in this shot is very good with excellent depth of field. The colour of the leaves makes a good backdrop, the detail on the fly itself is very good.

Thanks, John

Hi Iris,
Very nice shot, well focused. Have you tried to crop it a bit tighter?

Hello Irishues,
These House Flies are such a problem in Australia, so annoying, especially in Summer. However, they are an important insect in the food chain so I will forgive them, maybe. Your image of this one is great. Its big eyes and hairy legs can be seen so clearly. Nice surroundings too, not even on food.
Cheers,
Debbie

Bonsoir Irishues
Une jolie photo de cette insecte, avec de bons détails et de jolies couleurs. Bonne composition et POV également. Cette photo en macro est très belle, félicitation !
Merci et au revoir..JP

Hi Irishues,
This is a beautiful pov to see a house fly. The picture is well composed. Colors are vivid and well saturated. Bright light also under good control.
JC

Hi Irishues ,
very nice shot with beautiful and vivid colours.
well composed and great sharpness.
BG is excellent too.
Regards
Saeed

Lovely light and color tones in this very nice macro image Irishues.
Excellent use of depth of field with focus just on the fly.
Perfect sharpness and clarity.
One doen't always have to follow the rule of thirds to get the best out of the composition, but in this case it would have been better imho following that rule.
In other words an 1 1/2 inch crop of top does bring the fly 1/3 from the right hand side and 1/3 of top and does make the composition much stronger imho because the large empty space on top of the image does not really add to the entire scene.
Best regards, Harry

Hi Iris,
As you said not the most pleasant of our insects but you have managed to display it beautifully here. The surrounding colours are so bright and vibrant.I also seem to get a sense of movement as if it has bent down on the verge of take-off.Nice to see you and take care.
Regards, David

I bet this is not from your video camera, Iris :-)!
Ah, I remeber your short-lived tryst with your uncle's SLR now! Well, it shows; doesn't it?
This is a very well composed shot. The subject may be an humble House Fly but seen by a creative eye, it can turn into a thing of beauty.
You have done that here. Congratulations!
TFS.

Hi Iris,

this is a very interesting and comendable composition, for what is a very common insect.
The background colours look lush.
Good job.

Gary

Hello Iris,
this is an excellent shot of the common housefly one insect that is fine where it lives but not in one's home.Houseflies though not popular do serve a purpose and that is carrion eaters or rather their larvae do.The colour is very good and focus and point of view as well. Tfs. Bob
