Friends,

I would like to dedicate this picture to our TN friend Murali Santhanam. Thanks to Mariki for giving the ID.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Diptera
Suborder: Nematocera
Infraorder: Tipulomorpha
Family: Tipulidae

Insects in the family Tipulidae are commonly known as crane flies. Adults are very slender, long-legged flies that may vary in length from 2–60 mm (tropical species may exceed 100 mm).

In Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland they are commonly referred to as daddy long-legs, but this name can also refer to two unrelated arthropods: members of the arachnid order Opiliones (especially in the United States and Canada) and the cellar spider Pholcidae (especially in Australia).

Numerous other common names have been applied to the crane fly, many of them more or less regional, including, mosquito hawks, mosquito eaters (or skeeter eaters), gallinippers, gollywhoppers, and jimmy spinners.

At least 14,000 species of crane flies have been described, most of them (75%) by the specialist Charles Paul Alexander. This makes the Tipulidae the largest family of Diptera.

Whenever I requested for a photo shoot during my stay in bangalore our TN friends never ever refused. I am really blessed to have such a kind of friends with whom I never interacted before. This is what TN can do. My family/my friends and my colleagues they just can not believe when I describe the fun I had where ever I go and meet TN friends. Whether it is Smitha/Anil/Ramesh/Amar/Murali. It was not only fun and to me it is a family. My next target is to see HP and Pankaj.

I will put a separate Travelogue on our trip to Nandi Hills.

=====================================================

We spot this lovely insect and first for a moment I thought it was a wasp. But it is not. So beautiful the fella and was hiding behind this leaf. The approach was difficult and our TN friend Amar Bhaskar tried to remove the leaf to get the full. We tried to take a full shot by stretching ourself on the ground/bending and somehow I found this view better. I will post the full wing view later.

Thanks once again to Murali who made my journey to this Photography. Thanks to Ramesh for lending his camera and made my entry into this Macro World of Phogoraphy.

God Bless all TN members.

Hi Ganesh,
a really good shot of this Crane Fly!
Superb sharpness and the focus is on all the vital areas.
Great lighting and nice colours.
Superb BG too.
It's really great that you're all having TN meetings too... I think what's so good about them is that it turns something virtual (TrekNature) into reality.

Very well done, my friend.

Joe

I am not surprised our TN friends from Bangalore are such warm hosts, Ganesan. I am sure you had a wonderful time in their company.
The insect you have captured in Bangalore is new to me. It is a winged insect with very peculiar antennae. The bright orange colour is quite attractive.
It is a fine macro with rich colours.
TFS and all the best.
Ram
