Hello Friends,
A few months back I got a call from my friend Mr.Eldhose saying that he has found the nest of a Greater Flame back, a wood pecker, very beautiful and usually seen in the forest.I rushed to the place hoping to get a few pictures. I waited for three hours bearing the mosquito bites, but the bird will come and perch everywhere except on the tree where it is building its nest. Atlast I had to leave empty handed.
On the way back I spotted this Small Green Bee Eater. It was busy catching flies in mid air.In between it came to rest on this dried twig. I was surprised to find that it is sitting there with its mouth open and I could see its tongue.I took this shot from the car and I had to crop it about 30%.
Some details on the bird.:
The Small Green Bee-eater,merops orientalis.
A dainty grass green bird tinged with bronze colour on head and neck. Slender, long slightly curved bill and conspicuous black necklace. Seen in pairs or parties, in open country on telegraph wires, fence posts, etc.Sallies after insects, snapping them in its bill and circling back to the perch where it is battered to death and swallowed.
Some Exif Data:
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikkor 300mm + 1.4 TC
Focus mode: AF-S
Aperture: F / 9
ShutterSpeed:1/250
Exposure compensation: +0.7
ISO; 400
Image was cropped, levels adjusted, and noise removed.

Hello Smitha,
Nice colors, light and sharpness.Very beautifull composition.
Regards,
Nikos.

Good camera and SUPER lens with spot on focus. Considering the cropping it is even more amazing...Caught the colours very well and the pose is superior...another car-shooter eh? with me it is sometimes a necessity as I do not walk very well...but from notes over the past few weeks I see others do it too and it isn't easy shooting from a rig! Very nice!

Hallo Smitha
Time is little, but I cannot pass without leaving my comment and appreciation for this beautiful photograph. I am always amazed with the variety of colours of this bird, as if I see it for the first time. It creates the feeling and impression of a hand painted picture, and is really beautiful. I like the red eye, the slender built body and the opened beak. This one is indeed looking for some food. A good presentation. Thank you very much for sharing.
Best wishes
Anna

Hello Smitha,
A fine capture of a Little Green Bee-eater.
I like the POV, pose, bokeh BG and composition and the sharpness and pp work are excellent.
I have seen birds with their beaks open like this and always in hot weather so I wonder if this is a way of keeping cool!
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Hi Smitha,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful Bee-eater calling out for bees I suppose. Nice moment captured with lovely colours and sharp details. Superb lighting and exposure and the DOF is precise which isolates the subjects from the BG perfectly. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Nice Composition Smitha. This bird is a pleasure to watch. I am amazed at such a nice color combination God has given to this bird. I also love watching it hunt bees. Its agility in the air is amazing.

Hello Smitha,

Feeling a lot better now slowly catching up with all the posting I have missed, this is just wonderful, stunning detail in the plumage, beautiful colours, and the framing couldn’t be better, and that OOF background just completes a perfect picture, really lovely work :)

Cheers Rick ...

Hi Smitha,

Nice crying out loud pose. Perfect photo parameters also.

TFS,

Subhayan.

Dear Smitha,
a wonderful, lively, beautifully airy and clear documentation of the Oriental Bea-Eater. Perfect lighting, perfect composition with ample free space in front of the bird creating a very fine tension. A most pleasantly looking distant and even background, and delightful pastel colours all over. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

P.S.: Plenty of bees around at my place - but no bee-eaters yet. Have just been searching for Merops apiaster freshly arrived at a few places near Vienna - but in vain. Your picture is a very nice encouragement to look for them again.

Hello Smitha,
I guess it was some solace to get this wonderful shot of the bee eater as you finally headed home.
Superb PoV, showing all the brilliant colours on the bird, the Bg is perfect and sets off the subject sitting with great elan...That red tint in the eye provides a nice contrast to the other hues of green and blue all over the birdie.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

I am delighted to see you posting without inordinately long pauses in between, Smitha.
And what a post, this!
Fantastic capture of the Green Bee Eater with its beak open and tongue showing. The placement of the subject in the triangle formed by the branches is just magic.
Very sharp, crisp and colourful image that desrves accolades.

Quasi un quadro questo gruccione indiano.
Una foto di squisita fattura e di tecnica sopraffina e perfetta.
Per non parlare della splendida nitidezza generale.
