Hi Friends,

The story of the Red whiskered bulbuls and its eggs and kids continues. Once the baby bulbuls flew away, my kids removed its nest from that corner. We cleaned that corner but purposely kept the wires in unorganized manner. For last whole month there were no birds around that window.

But to my surprise on 19th July I saw the pairs of Bulbuls and these scaly breasted Munias visiting that place. I was excited to see those munias in the window. On 20th July the Red Whiskered Bulbul built a brand new nest in just one day. I thought we will have one more new Bulbul tenants now. But next few days not a single bird came in (non-office hours J ). Suddenly I saw these scaly breasted munias coming in and testing the nest by sitting in and adjusting few of the sticks. I am amazed with the symbiosis between the Bulbul and munia. From there onwards, they have modified the nest a lot. There are no eggs in there yet. But hope to see a new generation of these birds growing in this small nest.

These birds are shy than the Bulbuls so its getting tough to take their snaps. I have cropped these images to remove my window grills. Hope you will like it. Thanks for viewing. Have a great weekend!!!

The Scaly-breasted Munia, Lonchura punctulata also known as Nutmeg Mannikin or Spice Finch is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to Indonesia and the Philippines. The Scaly breasted Munia has been introduced in Puerto Rico and Hispaniola (Bond, James, Birds of the West Indies), where they are already widespread in lowland agricultural areas and are called pechijabao (A. Dod). Flocks of fifteen or more have been observed visiting bird feeders in Orange County, California, USA. It has also been introduced to Australia where it has a common to uncommon distribution along the east coast, from north of Townsville to south of Sydney (Field Guide to the Birds of Australia, Simpson,K and N.Day, 7th Edition, 2004).

Habitat
The Scaly-breasted Munia is a small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on seeds. It frequents open woodland and cultivation. The nest is a large domed grass structure in a tree or under the eaves of a house into which 4–10 white eggs are laid.

Characteristics
The Scaly-breasted Munia is 11–12cm in length. The adult has a stubby dark bill, brown upperparts and darker brown head. The underparts are white with black scale markings. The sexes are similar, but immature birds have pale brown upperparts, lack the darker head and have uniform buff underparts.

looking forward to the nesting and breeding progress & best wishes, thor.

Hi Kedar,

As you say neighbour, this is a good presentation of the birds. A nice POV, good focus showing fine detail in the plumage. Good colours, and background. Only slight gripe, the diagonal branch to the top left is slight distracting. Excellent note.

TFS and your remarks, regards Bill

Hi Kedar,

Both fotos are nice and sharp and show the detail well even although the lighting is from the back.
