This is sand boa snake swallow a same size of monitor lizard. This is first time noted
Sandboa General Description: This is a large, stout species of sandboa. It is a boldly patterned gray sandboa with a brown or reddish-brown zigzag stripe down the back. The upper surface of the snake is with keeled scales, the stomach has smooth scales. The upper surface of the short tail has strongly-keeled, pointed scales. The head is not distinguished from the neck, the eyes are small, the lower jaw is undershot. Babies are similar to adults.
Average adult size: 26"-34"
Distribution: From the Indian subcontinent, ranging from eastern Iran'and Afghanistan through Pakistan and into southern India.
Comments: sandboas feed on rodents throughout their life. In this photo sandboa was holding the mouth of a Monitor Lizard in its mouth .The lizard was almost equal in size. The Monitor lizard are known to also prey on snakes. This could be the first photographic recod of a rare instance of the hunter becoming the hunted.
As is true for most of the sandboas, adult females are much larger than males. Females give birth to large clutches of 5"-6" fat little babies, some clutches number more than 20. The babies are often snappy, but most adults are gentle deliberate snakes. |

DEVENDRA, no doubt his photo has a superb subject. The impact is very strong.
Even though, I have the feeling the technical quality could be a little bit better, as well as point of view (pov).
Anyway, the shot is really worthwhile posting.
I did a workshop; I hope you like it.
As Livio, said thi is without doubt a great moment you witnessed. Was it far away from you? Was it the only photo you took?

This may not be the most technically correct photo of a Rough-scaled Sandboa that I have ever seen, but it is certainly the most interesting!
I have had a long interest in sandboas and I knew rough-scaleds would eat a lot of things, but I had no idea they could take a small monitor! Great moment recorded!
