[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Dragonflies are among the most ancient of living creatures. Fossil records, clearly recognisable as dragonflies, go back to Carboniferous times which means that they date back almost 300 million years, predating pterodactyls by 100 million years and birds by some 150 million.
Dragonflies and damselflies belong to the insect order known as Odonata, meaning "toothed jaw" - their mouthparts are serrated.Dragonflies are insects in the sub-order Anisoptera (meaning"unequal-winged"). Hind wings are usually shorter and broader than Fore wings. They are usually larger, strongly flying insects that can often be found flying well away from water. When at rest, they hold their wings out from the body, often at right angles to it. The eyes are very large and usually touch, at least at a point.
A dragonfly's life-cycle from egg to death of adult is about 6 months. Some of the larger dragonflies take 6 or 7 years! Most of this time is spent in the larval form, beneath the water surface, catching other invertebrates.adult dragonflies eat other flying insects, particularly midges and mosquitoes. They also will take butterflies, moths and smaller dragonflies.
Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans (though they will bite in order to escape, for example, if grasped by the abdomen); in fact, they are valued as a predator that helps control the populations of harmful insects, such as mosquitoes.

This is my first macro post. It was taken with D200 /AF Micro 105mm f2.8, handheld.

A strikingly beautiful capture of this interesting species of dragonfly perched on a green leaf, Smitha.
Superb POV, focus, colours and composition. The diagonal placement of the subject across the frame is immensely attractive.
Some expert should be able to ID this dragonfly for you.

Hi Smitha, an interesting view here. Good focus and some nice detail you have here on the dragonfly. Good color saturation. I like the diagonal position as it gives more dynamics to the picture. Good composition. Great work, thankyou.

Hi Smitha,
Great image of this dragonfly.
Nice sky background,details and sharpness.
Very well done.

Smitha,

The presence of leaf gives an indication of the size of the dragonfly. Good colors and sharpness. Well composed. Try visiting http://www.mplonsky.com/photo/index.htm for inspiration and techniques. I was especially impressed by his technique for achieving extended DOF in macro pictures.
