The Dark Blue Tiger, Tirumala septentrionis dravidarum, is a Danaid butterfly found in South and Southeast Asia.It is a common butterfly in the hills of South India, found upto 2700 m. It is active throughout the year, but is common at low elevations during wet weather, frequently appearing in vast swarms.
In the udult butterfly the upperside is black with pale blue markings. Similar to the Blue Tiger. T.limniace exoticus but with narrower and darker markings. HW with a characteristic wish-bone marking in the cell, formed by 2 white streaks joined at the base. It is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 70-85 mm. The sexes are similar and are indistinguishable in flight.
Similar species are Blue Tiger, Glassy Tiger, Blue Glassy Tiger, Female Dark Wanderer and Common Mime.

This butterfly was feeding on the nectar of the Pentas when its probe got stuck. I wanted to share it with you all as I felt it was a rare and unusual moment. Hope you will also enjoy it as much as I did.
Thank you,
Smitha.

Hello Smitha,
What a capture!
Not only did you succeed in taking a sharp and detailed shot of a Dark Blue Tiger, but you captured it with a lantana floret stuck on its proboscis! I wonder if it managed to get rid of it.
Good composition with fine BG and saturated colours make this an excellent contribution to TN!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Wonderful capture of this Dark Blue Tiger in a nice pose on the Lantana. Considering your camera it is an excellent shot, pretty sharp and colours are lovely. I like the soft background too. Amazing to see this little flower stuck to its proboscis!! Nice note too!

It is a rare and unusual moment and interesting photo. Exposure is excellent. Nice detail. Wonder how it would look if cropped to landscape just above the flower?

Hello Smitha,
what a funny little misfortune happened to that Dark Blue Tiger! So well reported in a blissful shower of transparent colours in the backlight.
Thank you! My best regards,
