This picture was shot at Bannerghatta National Park. What you see is a sub-section of hundreds of Citrus Butterflies and Common Emigrants puddling on wet soil. This is a common behavior of butterflies.

Butterflies fulfill their need for minerals from wet soil and dirty water. One can especially find a large number of butterflies sipping water mixed with salts and minerals from wet ground. The regular honey does not provide them this food.

I wanted to take this picture from a lower angle. I also had only the 180 mm lens with its narrow depth of field for taking this picture.

What a fantastic congregation of Emigrants and Limes at one spot, Murali! You have truly done a wonderful job here. Congratulations!
I have never seen such an event ever before from India, though pictures of mass congregations of migrating butterflies have been shown here by Manyee from the US.

Wonderful photo! I just learned what puddling is and tried to photograph a congregation of sulphurs the other day...to no avail.
This is a splendid example and the composition is fantastic!
I think of a small butterfly army with three officers in dress uniforms out front. :)
