The effect of flash on the wings of Picturewing.

The Picturewing (Rhyothemis variegata) is a species of dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, found in South Asia. They appear to have weak flight and can easily be mistaken for butterflies.

The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does) we are left with a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution these are almost certainly the most often seen of the dragonflies. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The libellulids have stout-bodied larvae with the lower lip or labium developed into a mask over the lower part of the face.

This image is of the female. The male has fewer black markings on the wings. Found throughout the year, near marshes, ponds and paddy fields.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Anisoptera
Family: Libellulidae
Genus: Rhyothemis
Species: R. variegata

Hello Sumon,
The flash really works here - the effect is wonderful and accentuating the wing pattern against the dark (but not black!) background.
Great sharpness and colours and an excellent composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Sumon,
The use of flash really shows up this Picturewing with amazing golden reflections.
This shot is sharp and well composed with fine POV but the kudos here is in the special effects!

Hi Sumon,

A beautiful butterfly and using the flash added a dimension. The light, colors and details are all wonderful. I like how you can see the leaf thru the transparent wing.

Hi Sumon,

Hello Sumon,
a nice presentation of the beautiful colours and the delicate venation of the wings which are flat and really in one plane. You selected the most suitable point of view to take the picture. Is it right that the flash light comes slightly from the left?
Best wishes, Peter

I like the colors and reflections on the wings showing its nature. Excellent details, and great POV and DOF.
Fantastic job.
Congratulations and TFS

When I saw this dragonfly for the first time last September in Mumbai, I went crazy with excitement, Sumon. I shot nearly 50 pictures at a single go -- of both males and females. I have posted quite a few of them already and a big stash still awaits to be shared :-).

The use of fill flash has caused a spotlight effect on the subject and I like it. There is greater clarity of colours, textures and designs on the wings.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Sumon

This is indeed one of the most beautiful species of dragonflies i've seen and this photo is a lovely testament why.
The natural colors and contrast on its wings and eyes really shine lovely and are presented here with superb and very sharp details.
The flash really brings out the extra textures here, but in my opinion, it's just a little too strong.
Lovely framing and composition, though :)

Bravo and TFS
