[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was taking some pictures of these birds in Karanji lake in Mysore. These are shy birds and would not allow close. After we came out of the lake, I stood, near the boat jetty and later walking on the banks, an dapproached this bird close. I like the reflections here and the colors.

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Genus: Anas

Species: A. poecilorhyncha

The Spotbill, Anas poecilorhyncha, also known as the Spot-billed Duck, is a dabbling duck which breeds in tropical and eastern Asia.

This duck is resident in the southern part of its range from India to southern Japan, but the northern subspecies, Chinese Spotbill is migratory, wintering in southeast Asia. It is quite gregarious outside the breeding season and forms small flocks. The northernmost populations have been expanding their range northwards by more than 500 km since the early 20th century, possibly in reaction to global warming (Kulikova et al. 2004).

These are Mallard-sized mainly grey ducks with a paler head and neck and a black bill tipped bright yellow. The wings are whitish with black flight feathers below, and from above show a white-bordered green speculum and white tertials. The male has a red spot on the base of the bill, which is absent or inconspicuous in the smaller but otherwise similar female. Juveniles are browner and duller than adults.

The Chinese Spotbill is darker and browner; its body plumage is more similar to the Pacific Black Duck. It lacks the red bill spot, and has a blue speculum.

It is a bird of freshwater lakes and marshes in fairly open country and feeds by dabbling for plant food mainly in the evening or at night. It nests on the ground in vegetation near water, and lays 8-14 eggs.

Both the male and female have calls similar to the Mallard.( wikipedea)

Satish, Nice waves of different colors. Also the reflection of the duck in the water. Well done and TFS Ganesh

Hi Satish,
This is an excellent composition, and is sharply focused. Unfortunately, with the harsh lighting conditions, there is no visible detail in the burned out highlights, or in the darker tail feathers. I took a shot at adjusting it in the workshop.

Satish, I apologize. I wrote this during a break at work, using a LCD monitor that does not calibrate very well. Now that I look at it on my calibrated monitor, your exposure looks fine.

TFS, Joel

Hi Satish,
I also like the refection of the duck here.
I have seen this one from colsely but I came to know the name from you.

TFS!
