There were many of these ants on these flowers - I couldn't make out if they were actually drinking the nectar or were after other, smaller ants. Look at the mandibles on this one - why would a nectar drinking ant need a pair of those? Can someone enlighten me about this species? Thanks for stopping by...

Hmm.. not really to my knowledge. But I can see the eyes of the ant.(looks like - the ant family). But would love it to be more sharp.

Hi Uma,
The ants are very difficult to identify even for an expert, because the critical features can be microscopic. All ants have cutting mandibles. What the ants were doing on the flowers is guessing, too, but probably they were after seeds with protein/lipids or they were "milking" aphides that exude sugar containing liquid. The ant is in a typical defending position that you see more commonly on their nests and it was probably denfending its food source.
