Hello Friends,
Let me introduce you to two fantastic judo fighters, Myna Li and Myna Chan.Last week they gave me a spectacular show of their fighting skills. You must be wondering what generated the fight.Unlike what you see
in most of the movies, there was no damsel in distress waiting to be rescued, but the remnants of an over ripened mango lying nearby. It has been raining heavily for some days now, and the birds are finding it difficult to look for food. I have left an over ripened mango for the squirrels in the backyard in such a way that I can take photographs through the window. Then in the afternoon I heard a commotion outside and saw a group of mynas fighting with a squirrel and also among themselves for the food.Fortunately for me the clouds parted and a patch of sunlight gave me enough speed to capture this scene. I have heard that mynas are very brave birds ready to fight with other birds and even snakes, but had never witnessed it until now. I hope you will all like this action shot.
About Myna:Indian Myna, Acridotheres tristis is a familiar dark brown bird with bright yellow bill, legs, and bare skin around the eyes.A large white patch is very conspicuous in their wings when they fly. both sexes look alike. They are usually seen in pairs or parties about human habitations and on country side.Though they are seen on human habitations, they are highly vigilant birds.
They are omnivorous. They eat fruits, seeds, insects, worms and kitchen scraps. They are seen following the ploughs for earthworms and attend on grazing cattle for insects like grasshoppers. These birds alight on the ground and walk around searching for food.
The Mynas are very brave birds. They fight without fear with other birds and if the occasion arises, with owls, snakes and mongooses. They often invade the nests of parakeets, yellow throated sparrows and woodpeckers and live there after driving them away.
These are very noisy bird sand make a variety of sharp calls and chatter.
The nesting season is usually April to August.Nest is usually a collection of twigs, roots, paper and rubbish in a hole in a tree, wall or ceiling. They have a penchant for aluminum foil and silver coloured papers so that whenever they see these papers they collect it and keep it in their nests. The eggs are glossy blue in colour and usually they lay 4 to 5 of them in the nest.
These birds do a great help to farmers by controlling the grasshoppers in ripened paddy fields. Because they are a great help in pest control the mynas have been successfully introduced in many countries like New Zealand, Africa, Mauritius etc.

Hi Smitha

Lovely action shot of these scruffy fighters. It is amazing how one can see the fierceness and dubious intent on the expression of the aggressor. Those forward facing claws spell nothing good for the poor guy on the ground which seems to try and duck from the imminent attack. The problem was that it was in a very vulnerable position on the ground and had no real hope for escape. Fortunately these quarrels normally don't last too long since either the one would loose interest or the other one might make a quick getaway.

Good notes, great composition & POV, lovely colours, sharp details, and good exposure control all adds to make this an excellent posting.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
