Parthenium hysterophorus.
Common name: Congress Grass.
Common Hindi name: Gajar Ghas.
Plant: 1m.

Native of West Indies, Central and North America. Naturalised in India.
A very aggressive invader that grows prolifically and flowers throughout the year. Being highly adaptable, it can flourish where nothing else will grow.
A known allergen of human and cattle, causes asthama, eczema and contact dermatitis. The chemical analysis has indicated that all the plant parts including trichomes and pollen contain toxins called sesquiterpene lactones. The major components of toxin being parthenin and other phenolic acids such as caffeic acid, vanillic acid, ansic acid, p-anisic acid, chlorogenic acid, and parahydroxy benzoic acid are lethal to human beings and animals.
Plant is used in traditional medicine. In Homoeopathy system, allergies caused by Parthenium can be treated by a drug prepared from Parthenium. |
