Hamelia patens.
Synonym: Hamelia erecta.
Common names: Firebush, Hummingbird Bush, Scarlet Bush.
Plant: 4.5m. Semi-woody evergreen shrub.
Leaves: Elliptic or oblong, olive-green above, Paler beneath, opposite or in threes.
Flowers: Terminal infloresecence, in cymes up to 7.5cm long. Principal axis short. Secondary axis up to 2.5cm long bearing 3-5 flowers arranged in a bostryx or scorpioid cyme. Corolla tube cylindrical, 2cm long.
Native to central and southern Florida (from Marion County southward) and the West Indies, Central America and South America to Paraguay and Bolivia. Now distributed throughout the tropics.
The fruit have a refreshing, acidic taste and besides being much liked by some birds, they are also edible for humans; in Mexico, they are made into a fermented drink.
Indigenous people in tropical America use extracts of the leaves and stems to treat all kinds of skin diseases including rashes, skin fungus, sores and insect stings. Modern researchers have found that extracts of firebush contain several active phytochemicals which have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Other ethobotanical uses include treatment for menstrual cramps, headache, rheumatism, fever, and dysentery. Effective immunostimulants have been identified in firebush extracts and studies with rats have shown that firebush has analgesic, diuretic and hypothermic activities.

Hi Nirmal,
Good POV. I like how you focused on the leaves thus producing more touched to green.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Nirmal,

Very nice composition; seems the focus on the flowers themselves is a little less than perfect.

Does the corolla tube open eventually?

Seems you have a large number of invading species in your area. How do they affect the native flora?

TFS.

Ishi

Hello Nirmal,
It is amazing to think how many tropical American plants have been spread around the tropics by us, sometimes with undersirable effects. This firebush is a beauty with eye-catching flowers that you have captured sharply and set in a fine composition.
As there are no hummingbirds in India, I wonder if sunbirds use these flowers as a source of nectar.
Well done and thanks for sharing this,
Ivan

Hi Nirmal,
Wonderful shot of these red flowers. You really have presented the lesser known flowers beautifully, but for you I would never have known them so vividly. They all have been very educative too. Keep up the good work, I an enjoying every bit of this journey. Kudos.
TFS.
