Pied Bushchat

Size: Sparrow

Field characteristics:

Male black, with white patches on rump, abdomen and wings, the last particularly conspicuous in flight. Female earth brown with pale rusty coloured rump. Seperated paris on bush tops, etc., in open country

Distribution:

Patchy, resident or winter visitor throughout the Indian Union; Bangladesh; Pakistan; Sri Lanka; Myanmar; plains and hils upto about 2500m. Four races, on size of bill and extent of white on underparts.

Habits:

Affects sparsely scrubbed country and hillsides, commonly in the neighbourhood of cultivation and villages. From and exposed perch or bush-top darts down to the ground to pick up insect prey. Sometimes springs into the air or makes short sallies after winged insects. Utters a harsh chek chek ending in subdued tweet. In breeding season male delivers a pretty whistling song resembling Indian Robin's or Crested Bunting's from a perch or during the display flight with "Delayed action" wing-beats as in a pegion clapping. Song also uttered as a threat to rival male with tail depressed and neck craning forward menacingly, white rump fluffed out and wings dropped, flaunting the white shoulder patches.

Nesting:

Season - mostly between Febbruary and may. Nest - a pad of grass lined with hair or wool, in hole in ground, or earth-cutting, Eggs - 3 to 5, usually pale bluish white, speckled and blotched with reddish brown. Only female incubates, but male occasionally helps in building nest, and shares in feeding young.

Site of the photo: This photo of the female Pied Bushchat was taken near a lake near Sira, a town 120 kms from Bangalore. It was with its male perched close by on a sun flower. Spotted the pair while driving down the road back from the photo trek, probably making it a worth the trip.

Hi Kiran.
Pictured scene is simply amazing. Bird is looked on the nice plant perfectly. BG is terrific, Its colourfulness and smoothness are great. Only color tone passages are visible a little bit. POV and composition are blameless. Bravo. Well done.

Wow, all that yellow really makes this shot pop! Great composition, too. Your note is detailed, too; I appreciate all the information you gave about these common little birds. I just bought a Sony Alpha 300 (DSLR-A300) so am looking up other Sony camera owners' shots.
