I think this pelican looks too sad to be in the dark, dank water bird area of the Udaipur zoo. I love these birds! They are as large as me. They have beautiful colors, and usually are quite feisty, snapping their beaks at me as I go by them. This is a large area, but not the same as flying high in a sky, sun touching your wings with warmth. Without zoos, so many people could never see an animal, so good is done with exhibition of animals. How to be humane to the animals?

Hi Gloria. I think you have very well captured the downside of zoos. I am a big believer in zoos; without them, many, if not most people would never get to see a great many of the animals in the world. Without seeing the animals, my feeling is that they will not grow to care about them and forests/wetlands/deserts or any other habitat can simply be wiped out without humans caring much about it. Because of zoos, I believe that people (especially kids) will start to care and maybe take some action when they hear about deforestation or the like. However, I think it only fair to the animals to ensure their life in captivity is comfortable and rewarding to them. Your photo very well captures that this is not always the case.

BTW, strange how it appears there is something attached to the back of his head, corssing all the way across the pond ;)

Wow, this is really a harsh rendering of life in prison - birdprison as it were.The fact that we can see the pattern of the fence on its feathers almost gives an impression of a naked bird, ready for the oven. I am discovering a lot of sad but thought-provoking and therefor beautiful realism here on TN.
