Hi all,

Its been a very long and hectic 3 months for me and I have been on and off from TN :-(. Since its a new year for us (Ugadi) today, I wanted to start posting in TN again ( a resolution of sorts :-) )and also enjoy seeing and critiquing other's pictures.
I want to start this new year with a picture of this beautiful bird Skylark (Alauda arvensis), which is a small passerine bird species. This lark breeds across most of Europe and Asia and in the mountains of north Africa. It is mainly resident in the west of its range, but eastern populations are more migratory, moving further south in winter. Even in the milder west of its range, many birds move to lowlands and the coast in winter. Asian birds appear as vagrants in Alaska; this bird has also been introduced in Hawaii and western North America.

The Skylark is 16 to 18 cm long. It is a bird of open farmland and heath, known throughout its range for the song of the male, which is delivered in hovering flight from heights of 50 to 100 m, when the singing bird may appear as just a dot in the sky from the ground. The song generally lasts 2 to 3 minutes, but it tends to last longer later in the season. The male has broader wings than the female. This adaptation for more efficient hovering flight may have evolved because of female Skylarks' preference for males that sing and hover for longer periods and so demonstrate that they are likely to have good overall fitness.

Like most other larks, the Skylark is a rather dull-looking species on the ground, being mainly brown above and paler below. It has a short blunt crest on the head, which can be raised and lowered. In flight it shows a short tail and short broad wings. The tail and the rear edge of the wings are edged with white, which are visible when the bird is flying away, but not if it is heading towards the observer. The Skylark has sturdy legs and spends much time on the ground foraging for seeds, supplemented with insects in the breeding season.

The Skylark makes a grass nest on the ground, hidden amongst vegetation. Generally the nests are very difficult to find. 3 to 6 eggs are laid in June. A second or third brood may be started later in the year. The eggs are yellow/white with brownish/purple spots mainly at the large end.

Hope you ppl will like this. Once again Happy Ugadi to all those ppl who celebrate New Year today

Update: For second time today ppl have told me this is a pipit after some investigation i think its a pipit evident by its thin beak , so i'm changing the title.
Thanks cuckooroller for correcting me

Cheers,
Goutham R

Hello Goutham,
Beautiful photo of this Skylark. Excellent details and natural colours. Maybe I should have cropped a piece of the right side. Great OOF BG and POV.
Regards,
Peter

Gotham,

Beautiful image of Skylark. Crisp and colorful. Very good perch too. A bit too away from center.

Happy Ugadi.

Hi Goutham,
Happy Ugadi to you too. A very good capture of this beautiful skylark bird. Superb details and excellent composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Goutham,

The bird is captured perfectly sharp. POV is great.
Very nice blurred background.

Hi Goutham,
The second bird deemed a Skylark that I have looked at in the last couple minutes. Not a Skylark - This is an Anthus sp. (a Pipit). Murali has also uploaded one - I will try and look at both as I have time for the ID.

Hello Goutham,
Happy New Year!
You start with a wonderful image; no critiques!
Well, positive critiques...I do like the light for instance and the Lark's perching, the point of view, the depth of field and so forth.

beautiful colors and very nice detail .wonderful composition and sharpness.

Happy Ugadi to you, Goutham!
May the new year's resolutions take a concrete shape in your life!
I have heard so much about Skylarks, especially in English literature, but I am seeing one today with my own eyes.
It is a brilliant capture of the bird perched on a dry branch. There is nothing else in the background.
I would rate this as another masterpiece from you.
Best regards,
Ram

HI Goutham,

Outstanding shot. All is superb. Simply and fine scene, brilliant image of the beautiful bird, amazing smooth and colourful BG, blameless composition. Bravo.

Hi Ramesh,

Great shot of a pipit. Minimalistic frame. Crisp details. Sharpness imitating that of a film plate. Little catchlight too.

Subhayan.
