Hi all,
Last Sunday, the gang in Banglore visited Hesarghatta lake and i had pushed the ISO to 400 to gain of the shutter speed as I was hoping for some action shots of this beautiful bird, But what i got was this beauty among thorns!
This is (Coracias benghalensis) Indian Roller which is a member of the roller family of birds which breeds in tropical southern Asia from Iraq to Thailand. It is not migratory, but undertakes some seasonal movements.
The Indian Roller is a stocky bird, the size of a Jackdaw at 30-34cm. It has a warm brown back, lilac breast and face, and blue crown, wings, tail and belly. Sexes are similar, but the juvenile is a drabber version of the adult. The Southeast Asian race C. b. affinis has a green back and purple underparts, and is sometimes considered a separate species.
Indian Roller is striking in its strong direct flight, with the brilliant blues of the wings contrasting with the brown back.
This is a common bird of warm open country with some trees. These rollers often perch prominently on trees, posts or overhead wires, like giant shrikes, whilst watching for the large insects, lizards and frogs that they eat. They will follow tractors for disturbed invertebrates, and dash into the smoke of a forest fire on a similar mission. They are fearless and will dive and roll at humans and other intruders.
The display of this bird is a lapwing-like display, with the twists and turns that give this species its English name. It nests in a lined hole in a tree or building, and lays about 3-5 eggs.
The call of Indian Roller is a harsh crow-like chack sound. Also makes a variety of other sounds including a metallic boink calls. Especially vociferous during the breeding season.
Indian roller has been given the status of state bird from Indian states of Karnataka, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh

Hello Goutham,
If it weren't for the slight close cropping at the top and the bottom this for me would have been a perfect capture of an Indian Roller.
As it is, it's a great shot in the thorn bush taken from a fine POV with excllent sharpness and colours.
A beautiful picture to view and thanks for sharing it,
Best regards,
Ivan

hi Goutham,
waow, on se demande comment cet oiseau réussi à rester sur cette branche piquante. En tout cas, superbe réalisation, la lumière et les couleurs sont extra.

Hi Goutham,

Excellent work.Wonderful photo with lovely colours.Ligthing, composition and detail are good.

Wonderful colorful image Goutham.
Lovely details and soft BG.
Sharpness and exposure are excellent and the natural framing of the bird by the thorny twigs is wonderful.
Only little minor point, atleast in my opinion, is the thight crop on top.
Nevertheless its a beauty. TFS!!!

Best wishes, Harry

Hi Goutham,
Wow, what a sharp image...
in the details, not to mention the sharpness of the spikes on the plant.
The colors are beautiful, and the pose is excellent.
If anything, I wish there were a bit more room above and below the bird.
The crop seems a bit tight to me on the vertical aspect.
TFS. : )

One of the best Indian Roller pictures I have seen on this website, Goutham.
What delightful colours and what a well thought of composition!
The pun on the words in the caption is well-suited to the image of a beautiful bird surrounded by thorns.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Goutham, It looks as if it had been jailed behind a bush of thorns. Beautiful sharp picture. I wish there was some catch light in the eye.

Very nice image of this beautiful bird!
Stunning clarity and sharpness.
Was this taken at 500mm? I found the Bigma was slightly soft at the long end but obviously it's not so with yours! :-D
Magnificent colours.
This bird looks great among those thorns.
Very well done Goutham,

Joe
