BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON: This Medium-large size (adults almost 2 feet or 60 cm in length) stocky heron with stout bill and cloudy black crown and back, white or grey body, orange-red eyes is less common in India though sighted in different parts of the world, which include Europe, Africa, America, central, east and southeast Asia. These nocturnal birds are chiefly resident of low lands including coastal areas of tropical parts and others migrate to tropical areas during winter. It feeds on aquatic animals and often roosts on trees at day time far off from the water mostly in abandoned places. Also known as Night Heron the species gets its binomial name Nycticorax nycticorax, (the word means ‘night raven’) for its nocturnal habits and harsh crow-like call. In Delhi, zoo is the best place to watch them. At evening a steady scanning may locate the birds flying over Yamuna River near Okhla and Madanpur Khader.

Some other names in Indian languages are: In Hindi- Tar bagla, Kokrai, Kwak; Bengali- Wak bak, Bach ka; Kashmir- Bor; Marathi- Raat Baggal; Gujrati- Awaak or Waak; Tamil- Vakka; Malayalam- Toppi kokka.

Dear Partha,

A little bit of blurriness is present in the picture. It may be due to the handshake itself. The rule of thumb is, the focal lengh in mm [converted to 35 mm equiv.] should be reciprocated to get the highest exposure time for a shot. In your case the focal length was 453mm and 1/453 sec. should be the largest exposure time you should use at this distance. You can as well make it lesser but then again a big aperture shall reduce DOF. Anyway nice share of this beautiful bird.

Subhayan.

Dear Partharathi,

Great picture of Black-crowned Nigth Heron. Very good composition and colours, nice POV. Did some workshop, but even better results could be achieved by sharpening only a restricted area.

A fascinating bird with a very romantic name. These powerful lenses are hard to use. I have a lot of learning to do. :)You're doing great. Keep snapping!!

Hi Mr. Partha,
A lovely capture of this beautiful night heron. Excellent composition and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Good close-up image of the Night Heron, Mr Sengupta.
The colours and contrasts are very good.
Though the BG is a little noisy, it doesnot affect the subject at all.
Regards,
Ram
