[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the third picture in the Bee Eater series. I have been trying to shoot birds in flight for some time. Kites have been easy since they glide. It is the fast moving birds which require a complete revamp in our approach to shooting "Birds in flight". Shooting Bee Eaters gave me an insight as to how I could improve. Bee Eaters are extremely fast birds, which flap a lot, change directions in split seconds and hence have a completely unpredictable flight path. Even when you have them flying all around, it can be quite a task to get a focus lock even in AFC mode. Hide helps shoot these beauties only when they land on a perch.
The probability of getting a good flight shot is to be out in the open, NOT in hide. It also helps if we know where to focus. One technique which has helped me get decent shots is to keep the AF in AFS mode, lock the focus and then shift the frame to somewhere above the bird so that when they do take off and your response is quick enough, you land a good flight shot. Hope this helps all those who want to shoot these birds in all their glory "In-flight". Goodluck!
