Indian Palm Squirrel

I shot this Indian Palm Squirrel during my visit to Okhla Bird Park on June 1. It kept on scampering around me while I was trying to shoot a yellow bird in the tree. Since the bird was partially hidden in the leaves, I impulsively trained my lens on the squirrel and took one picture. I am posting it today.

The Indian Palm Squirrel (Funambulus palmarum) also known as Three-Striped Palm Squirrel, is a species of rodent in the Sciuridae family. It is found in India and Sri Lanka.

The stripes on the Palm Squirrels back are explained by a Hindu legend. The legend has it that a squirrel helped in the construction of the Adi sethu (bridge) at Rameswaram. The bridge was being constructed by Lord Rama and the Vanara Sena, and the squirrel played its part by rolling in beach sand then running to the bridge to shake the sand from its back, all the time chanting Lord Rama's name. Lord Rama was pleased by the creature's dedication and, in stroking the squirrel's back, the mark of Rama's fingers was left on the squirrel ever since.

This association with Lord Rama explains why squirrels are considered sacred in India.

A chuckle for me this morning. I thought perhaps someone was trying to make "specialty animals"...there is a word in the US for cross breeding some unusual varieties to come up with the most unusual looking pets...I am not at all sure of how I feel about the idea....but an Indian Squirrel sounds like a natural thing to me. what a concept. First I have seen...Very nice addition and a somewhat rare one at that...at least for me..I have yet to see all:-)

Hello Ram,
This is a lovely and well-timed capture of this agile little Palm Squirrel. I never saw a Squirrel in India but it may have been the same species as we saw on Borneo once. THey're very pretty. Excellent sharp details and natural colours. A fine background too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Ram,

I have loved these Palm Squirrels ever since I saw them in India and spent time watching them in their antics. An excellent shot of him coming down the tree with that great bushy tail behind him. Beautiful colors and details and a fantastic natural scene.
