Hi all,
Today i would like to present a picture of Ariadne merione, also known as the Common Castor, which was feeding on some kind of secretion from Aphids ( iknew ants do this and this is the first time i'm seeing a butterfly do this ! ). I noticed it for quite a while and looks like this guy liked it! I choose this POV to show what was happening and it also shows one of the various sources from which they get there food!

This is an brownish-orange butterfly with brown lines whose larvae feed almost exclusively on Castor Ricinus communis. This species is found in south-eastern Asia. Their wingspan ranges between 30-35mm. Like others in the Nymphalidae family, their front two legs are small and unused, effectively making them four-legged. These smaller appendages are covered with long hairs, giving them the characteristic brush look.

for more info have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariadne_merione

Thanks in advance for dropping by

Cheers,
Goutham R

hi goutham,
one more beautiful and almost perfect image from you. this time some unseen behaviour too. thats good work. the specimen seems to be in good condition. some pink flower (diffused) distracting the frame which has good composition. tfs.

I thought lipids were some sort of fat molecule??? Hmmmm. Are you entirely sure that is what you mean here? I am confounded, which isn't an unusual thing for me. The notion that lipids secret denotes the act of a carbon based life form...well I guess it's off to the deep internet space in search of lipids...I have my day cut out for me...deep thought... Lovely patterns in the image by the way!

Hello Goutham,
thank you for posting this picture nicely showing us the underside wing pattern of merione which
for me is more beautiful than the upperside pattern.
Presentation of the butterfly, the plant and the minute bugs is well-focused and sharp.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Goutham,

A very unusual photo of a butterfly doing something we would not expect it to do. Wonderful pov with the Common Castor behind the plant. The wing markings are very beautiful with lovely colors and fine details. Very interesting shot.

Jane

Hi goutham,

Your pov is very good, showing the behaviour. some how I like the play of colour at the back ground [sorry Nagraj] :) TFS.

Hi Goutham,
A very interesting presentation of this feeding butterfly.
I'm not expert on the theme, but certainly call my attention this behavior.
I like the POV used to appreciate in detail the different sizes and the action going on.
Well done and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM
