Hi all,
As it was a national holiday today( Its our Independence Day)I was at home and shot some picture of this moth in my garden pot as it was roosting there. I'm not sure of the ID, but this looked like some kind of hawk moth .

Sphingidae is a family of moths (Lepidoptera), commonly known as hawk moths, sphinx moths and hornworms, that includes about 1,200 species . It is best represented in the tropics but there are species in every region . They are moderate to large in size and are distinguished among moths for their rapid, sustained flying ability . The narrow wings and streamlined abdomen are clearly adaptations for rapid flight. Some hawk moths, like the hummingbird hawk moth, hover in midair while they feed on nectar from flowers and are sometimes mistaken for hummingbirds. This hovering capability has evolved only three times in nectar feeders: in hummingbirds, certain bats, and these sphingids ((an example of convergent evolution). Sphingids have been much studied for their flying ability, especially their ability to move rapidly from side to side while hovering, called 'swing-hovering.' It is thought that this evolved to deal with ambush predators that lie in wait in flowers.
Some of the sphingids are some of the fastest flying insects, capable of flying at over 50 km/h (30 miles per hour). They have a wingspan of 35-150 mm.

Hope you ppl liked it and happy Independence day to all Indians!

Hi Goutham.
Brilliant image of a nice moth pictured at so attractive scenery. I like impressive diagonal composition, superb flash work and great details/colours of the image. Bravo. Perfect job.
Alexei.

Hi goutham,

It has been nicely captured and well composed, but I personally felt its tight composition /bold image, but details are good on the moth. TFS.

Hello Goutham!

I can't help with ID, but probably you're right - it looks like some kid of Hawk moth. I like its shape and camouflage. Detailed macro, pity that BG isn't uniformly black.

Hi goutham,
very nice picture, but tooooooooo tight compo. Yopu could have added some flash light or reflector to give 3D effect,,, .good species of this hawk moth.

Hi Goutham,

Happy Independence Day to you. A wonderful moth with fine details and colors. The pose on the branch shows off the entire moth. Lovely setting, background and composition.

Jane

Hi Goutham,
Indeed a good picture. I love the crisp details! but you could have some breathing space at the rear end of moth, I am also having a picture of this moth shot at Kudremukh, I will try to get U the correct ID if possible, the note you have given it self is enough, exact ID is difficult and too laborious which an entomologist can afford better!

Goutham,
this looks more like 'Nighthawk' bomber than a moth. No wonder those people at lockheed martin named the bomber "Night'hawk'". Wish they could have copied the color and markings pattern also on to the bomber...

goodpick...was there a chance give more space near the top wing portion...looks tiny bit cramped..

Hi Goutham,
very nicely composed image with gret detail and colours. I particularly like the single multi coloured leaf on the right and the DOF is excellent, well done!
Paul

This is an exotic species of Moths, Goutham.
Its earth brown colour must be a camouflage tool for the insect.
The image is very well captured, especially the patterns on the fringes of its wings.
Thanks and all the best.

Sphingidae, Sphinginae

Psilogramma increta

cheers, Roger.
