My interest of capturing butterfly images has grown manifolds after joining TN. I was quite eager to capture the various species of butterfly but for this i had to chase them in various parks and outskirts of the city. Some times even at reserve forests too.

During my butterfly chasing sessions i observed that some Butterflies are attracted to lantana flowers and the perch of the so colorful insect on these equally colorful flower made an excellent shooting material.

In my small butterfly garden i have many lantana bush which i have carefully planted and grown for the butterflies. Even when i am not shooting , wathing the butterflies in close proximity gives a lot of pleasure. My seven years old daughter has started recognising the butterflies with their names. I was glad when she told me that a plain tiger was sipping nectar. I was surprised too.

The species presented here are as under:
1 The Danaid Eggfly
2 The Common Leopard
3 The Painted Lady
4 The Peacock Pansy
5 The Common Lime
6 The Common Crow
7 The skipper
8 The Tailed Jay
9 The Dainaid Eggfly mimicking The Plain Tiger
10 The Indian Skipper
11 The Common Jazebel
12 The Peacock Pansy
13 The Skipper
14 The Wallace Swift
15 The Grey Pansy
16 The Motteled Emigrant
17 The Plain Tiger
18 The Blue Tiger
19 The Mimic form of Eggfly
20 The Lemon Pansy

(Details from wikipedia about lantana)
Lantana is a genus of about 150 species of perennial flowering plants, native to tropical regions of the Americas, Africa and existing as an imported plant in numerous areas, especially in the Australian-Pacific region. The genus includes both herbaceous plants and shrubs growing to 0.5-2 m tall. Their common names are shrub verbenas or lantanas.

Lantana's aromatic flower clusters (called umbels) are a mix of red, orange, yellow, or blue and white florets. Other colors exist as new varieties are being selected. The flowers typically change color as they mature, resulting in inflorescences that are two- or three-colored.

"Wild lantanas" are plants of the unrelated genus Abronia, usually called "sand-verbenas".

Butterflies which are attracted to lantana flowers are most notably Papilioninae (swallowtail and birdwing butterflies). Hesperiidae (skippers) and certain brush-footed butterflies (namely Danainae and Heliconiinae), as well as some Pieridae (e.g. Cloudless Sulphur, Phoebis sennae) and Lycaenidae also like to visit the plants' flowers. Your critiques and comments are most welcome. Thanks a lot for the interst shown in my earlier post of life cycle of common lime butterfly.

Wow! It is quite a sight to behold. I wish I had a postcard or even larger something like this...This is something I would actually pay for if I saw it somewhere and knew who had done it as I do...and that's saying quite a bit becuase I usually do not buy pictures, nor do I buy software for that matter....what a wonderful image or set thereof...fantastic!

Hello Pankaj!

Absolutelly stunning collage! Almost all of these butterflies look so exotic! Maybe two or three species are known in Europe also. It is hard to chose best one but my favourite is Blue Tiger.

Wonderful collection of b-flies Pankaj, I'm envious :)
Each one a gem.

Hola Pankaj.- Excellent collection. All of them are beautiful. Great work My friend. from now I will take care of My Lantana to.

Pankaj, as a teacher, I just can't stop myself from declaring this collage as yet another very effective teaching aid to impart children the knowledge about some of India's most prominent butterflies. That all of them are sitting atop lantana flowers is yet another aspect that throws bright light on the feeding habits of butterflies.
You have also shown great creativity in arranging these stamp-sized images into a lovely collage.
Well done and thanks.

Hello Pankaj,
This is a very lovely collage showing a wonderful range of butterflies on your Lantana bushes. The Lantana is to you what the Buddleia bush is to us, I'd guess! I love to see them all together like this, a real feast for the eyes! Excellent work!

Very interesting and creative presentation. You are right about lantana. It seems to be a butterfly magnet. I planted a few in my back yard also for the same reason.

Hello Pankaj,
Sorry, I misssed this very interesting posting. I also just could verify that some plants are very attractive for insects, like your Lantana flowers. An excellent assemblage, very homogeneous, because of the presence of the same flower in every picture. Just great to have such a choice of beauties. Thanks also for the names of all these butterflies.
Best regards
Anne

A superb montage, Pankaj!
Great to see not only all these different Indian butterflies, but to realise what a fantastic butterfly flower this S. American plant, Lantana, is!
Strangely, when we can grow it in the summer, lantana is not as attractive to N. European butterflies.
TFS this excellent piece of work,
Regards, Ivan

Ciao Pankaj, fantastic collage of your splendid butterflies, wonderful colors, great details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio
