Hi all,

This is another shot of Bombyliidae, which is a large family of flies with hundreds of genera, although their life cycles are not well known. Adults generally feed on nectar and pollen, thus are pollinators of flowers. They superficially resemble bees, thus are commonly called bee flies, and this may offer the adults some protection from predators.
The larval stages are predators or parasitoids of other insect eggs and larvae. The adult females usually deposit eggs in the vicinity of possible hosts, quite often in the burrows of beetles or wasps/solitary bees. Where most often in the insect world parasitoids are highly specific in the host species that they will infect, some bombyliids are opportunistic and will use a variety of hosts. While bombyliids have a great variety of species, rarely are individuals of any one species abundant, and this is perhaps one of the poorest known families of insects relative to its size. There are at least 4,500 described species, and probably thousands as of yet undescribed.

Probably this is Bombylius major!

Truly magnificent capture of this exotic Fly in flight, Goutham.
The focus on the abdomen is unbelievably sharp. How did you do it at 1/160 beats me.
The plain BG does wonders in highlighting the subject in flight.
Well done and TFS.

Hello Goutham!

Perfect timing and POV. I like semi-dorsal view very much. Clear BG and nice light underline details on insect's body. Great macro work.

Hi Goutham

Amazing capture of this fly in-flight. Really good DOF considering the circumstances. Good sharpness. Amazing long proboscus.

Chris

Hi Goutham,

The flight picture of this fly is amazing, just in time exposure, the direction of grass blade[?]out of focus and back ground adds to the picture.TFS.

Hello Goutham,

It is never easy to catch insectes in flight! And you did very good here. The only thing maybe is that the focus is more on the abdomen that the head. Maybe with a smaller aperture the whole insect would have been in focus. That being said, the colors are wonderful, the details on the abdomen, awesome! Nice green bg also.

A good shot!

And TFS! :-)
