[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
praying mantis, or praying mantid, is the common name for an insect of the order Mantodea.

Like all insects, a praying mantis has a three- segmented body, with a head, thorax and abdomen. The abdomen is elongated and covered by the wings in adults. Females have strong and large cerci. The first thoracic segment, the prothorax, is elongated and from it arises the modified foreleg.

Mantids, with their huge compound eyes mounted on a triangular head, have a large field of vision. They use sight for detecting movement of prey and swivel their heads to bring their prey into a binocular field of view. They have a fully articulated head, and are able to swivel it 180 degrees as well as pivot it. Their antennae are used for smell.

Being a carnivorous insect, the mantis feeds primarily on other insects. However, it is not uncommon for larger mantids to consume small reptiles, birds and even small mammals.

To capture their prey, mantids use their camouflage to blend in with the surroundings and wait for the prey to be within striking distance. They then use their raptorial front legs to quickly snatch the victim. It then uses the front legs to help position the victim so it may eat it better.

Hello pankaj,

This is a fine portret of the mantis. You have used a fine DOF showing the insect in great details. As you have used well the light you have got well looking colors.

Thank you for sharing,

Hi Pankaj,

You are the Praying Mantis king! Another fantastic shot. This one seems to be hamming it up for the camera. The face is magnificent with great detail and colors. I love the raised "leg" and the pointed toe. Just marvelous against the black background.

Hi Pankaj,
Very good macro picture of Mantis. She must be female just looking for a male, hence the smile or does she smile also after eating her spouse? Great POV, composition, sharp details and nice colours.
