Hi all,

As Nagraj mentioned in his post earlier, this is the other subject, that we got today in Lalbaugh botanical gardens. I named this as Beauty and the Light for obvious reason!
This is praying mantis and i don't know the exact ID yet.
Mantodea or mantises is an order of insects which contains approximately 2,200 species in 9 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. Most of the species are in the family Mantidae.A colloquial name for the order is "praying mantises", because of the typical "prayer-like" stance. The term is often mis-spelled as "preying mantis", and this is an eggcorn since mantises are notoriously predatory. The word mantis is Greek for "prophet" or "fortune teller". In Europe, the name "praying mantis" refers to only a single species, Mantis religiosa. The closest relatives of mantises are the orders Isoptera (termites) and Blattodea (cockroaches), and these three groups together are sometimes ranked as an order rather than a superorder.

Hi Goutham. This is a first class close up of the Mantis . You have used the light so well to give fine detail and bright colours. It has some unusal markings which you have taken so well TFS. Interesting notes too.
Nick..

This is a unique Praying Mantis, Goutham. I have seen it for the first time. Normally, these creatures are just green, but this fellow has wonderful patterns and colours on its abdomen.
You have managed a very good shot of it despite demanding light conditions.
Happy New Year to you and family!
Ram

Quite beautiful light, razor sharp and diagonal compo ,for the dynamics
Bravo
Patrick

Hi Goutham,
A decorated praying mantis, you have got it under nice soft lighting and the rim light is also great. By using 1/30sec you are right in the middle of danger zone of image blur but have come out with a winner. TFS

Anil

Goutham, Lovely lighting indeed. Rim lighting from behind and fill-n light from the front, makes this angel beautiful.

Hello Goutham,
This Praying Matis looks rather different from the once we usually see here. I like its beautiful camouflage markings and beautiful colours. I like the light too and the smooth background in a contrasting colour. A very fine composition!
Many thanks and best wishes for 2009! Ulla

Hello Goutham,
this is a real masterpiece in all respects, i.e. light, colours, background, composition, point of view,
focus and sharpness. Furthermore, you captured an attractive insect which is obviously difficult to discover
on the similar looking plant.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Goutham

A superb macro of this mantis species!
IT's colors and texture are absolutely gorgeous and one can easily see how well it blends into its surroundings from this photo.
Very good sharpness and excellent exposure control, despite the difficult light.
Well done, really!

Bravo and TFS

Hallo Goutham
What a splendid shot of this mantis. The pose in which you've captured it is simply fantastic and it's practically posing for you like a model. The clarity of the details and patterns on the plumpish body is great and well seen. A well composed macro shot of this insect with spot on focus and beautiful details on its typical body. Thanks for sharing this lovely and pleasing image.
Kind regards
Anna.

Hello Goutham, Though Praying Mantis is not one of my favourites , I can not help but agree with you that this one is a beauty. I have not seen one with such beautiful patterns on it. Excellent use of light, impeccable sharpness and clean background.
