This is Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary as seen from the mid intersection. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a nature park in the Indian state of Sikkim. The road heading to Yumthang is also seen within the frame. Shingba is renowned for its unique abundance of rhododendron trees and shrubs. The rare and endemic "Rhododendron nevium", the state tree, is found in this sanctuary. There are approximately 35+ species of rhododendrons which grow in temperate and alpine regions, their flowering is best seen from May to August in stunning colours hillsides.

Rhododendron (from the Greek: rhodos, "rose", and dendron, "tree") is a genus of flowering plants in the family Ericaceae. It is a large genus with over 1000 species and most have showy flower displays. It includes the plants known to gardeners as azaleas. It is the national flower of Nepal.

The Rhododendron is a genus characterized by shrubs and small to (rarely) large trees, the smallest species growing to 10-100 cm tall, and the largest, R. giganteum, reported to over 30 m tall.

Best time to visit- March-May.
Location- The sanctuary is situated near Yumthang, around 137kms from Gangtok, Sikkim.

The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is located at the Yumthang valley in the northern part of Sikkim. The sanctuary is surrounded on the east by Chuba-Sagochen mountain ranges and on the west by Chomzomei Tso that extends till the Lava Pass. The sanctuary covers an area of around 43sq.kms, which comprises of several species of rhododendrons. The height of the place ranges from 3048m to 4575 meter. The Yumthang Chhu River runs through the sanctuary and lends the place a more picturesque look. The spring season is the ideal time for visiting the place.

Flora- The place is very rich in natural vegetation cover and comprises of various species of plants & trees. The chief attraction of the place is the Rhododendron shrubs & trees that are found here in abundance. The different species of Rhododendrons lends the park a multi-colorful look dwith beautiful aroma all around during the spring season. In addition to this, there are various other trees like Potentillas, Saxifrages, Primulas, Aconites, Poppies, Gentians and many more.

Fauna- The sanctuary also provides shelter to various animals like Tigers, Goral, Common Hill Partridge, Serow, Spotted Linsang, Blood Pheasant etc.

Unfortunately, the Rhododendrons are not in bloom in October, Subhash, otherwise this place would have looked like a paradise in spring season.
Yet the thick growth of these trees among the pines gives the place a verdant look even in autumn.
I like the depth of view in this picture.

Hi Subhash,

How magnificent this must be during its peak season. I can't imagine 35 different species of Rhododendrons blooming at one time. Even in the autumn it is a beautifu scene with the mountains in the background.
