First of all, I wish to thank all those who critiqued my previous picture of a Garden Lizard in breeding colours. Goutham Ramesh gave me a tip in his critique which I followed today to my great advantage. The garden is full of lizards these days and the males are looking all red and swollen around the neck. I shot one more today and it came out well, thanks to Goutham's tip.
Today was another lucky day for me because I met the first Slender Skimmer of the year in our garden. I love this dragonfly and feel bonded with it because it is so cooperative a photo model it returns to the same perch again and again. Today I am posting its first picture and I do hope you like it. The time was about 11 in the morning. The sun was hot and oppressive. The light was harsh and excessively bright. I don't know what happened, but this picture turned out as if the subject was in the spotlight. That is why the caption.

Slender Skimmer or Orthetrum sabina is a common and very widespread dragonfly found all over Asia and parts of Australia, the Middle East and Northern Africa.
The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does) we are left with a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution, these are almost certainly the most often seen of the dragonflies.
The genus Libellula is mostly New World, but also boasts one of the few endangered odonates from Japan -Libellula angelina. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The related genus Plathemis includes the whitetails. The genus Celithemis contains several brightly marked species in the southern United States. Members of the genus Sympetrum are called darters (or meadowhawks in North America), and are found throughout most of the world. Several Southern Hemisphere species in the genera Trithemis and Zenithoptera are especially beautiful. Other common genera include Tramea and Pantala.

Hi Ram,
this skimmer always give the beautiful pose to each and every one. I got a few and they are such an amazing creature.
You have taken this shot with excellent care. The light falling upon its back is so effectively, making it glows and shines out of the dark background.
Lovely composition in its diagonal crossing.
The stripes and the compound eyes are very detailed and well seen in clarity.

Regards,
Foozi

Bonjour Ram,

Exellente capture sur ce fond foncé qui fait très bien ressortir le profil de la libellule.

Apparemment, tu as eu de la chance d'avoir une libellule si coopérative!

Bonne journée

brigitte

Hello Ram !
This is truly a gorgeous capture ! I love how the light seems to be falling on the Dragonfly, making it stand out on the dark BG in the most beautiful way. I also like all the pin sharp details, the pose of the dragonfly and the composition. Her abdomen looks strange, I think. Thank you for sharing this beauty !
Valérie.
