Last year in April and May, our garden was flush with all sorts of Hoverflies. This year, there were none until yesterday when I noticed this Eristalinus sepulchralis cowering among the leaves of a bush, really bushed in by the summer heat at 10 in the morning. The temprature in and around New Delhi has been hovering over 40C in the last one week.
I took the shot hand-held using fill flash.
Hope you like it.

Syrphid Hover Fly
Eristalinus sepulchralis

Order: Diptera
Family: Syrphidae
Genus: Eristalinus
Species: sepulchralis

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as Hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.
As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring on flowers. The adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year; hence aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for beneficial use in biological control. Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.
About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

Hello Ram,
Interesting to read that the apparition of insects have a great fluctuation from year to year, I can assess the same here. The first hoverfly you met was a success. You made an excellent picture of this special looking fly. Amazing to see these stripes and points. Well framed and best sharpness. Well done.
Kind regards
Anne

Hi Ram,

A macro for extra points!

And a "bug" that I had ever seen!

Ram lately're improving the ability to make these excellent contacts with a master domain of the auxiliary flash.

Congratulations, good control and good technique.

Jesús

What a lovely macro shot of a Hoverfly. Very well captured. Syrphid Hover fly makes a screech by moving its wings vigorously if I am not mistaken. Thanks for the detailed note. tfs and best wishes.
