Family: Labiatae
English name: Holy basil
Tamil name: Tulasi
Sanskrit names: Tulasi (since it has no other drugs equal to it),
Surasa,(since it has good essence), Butaghni (since it wards off bad sprits), sulabha (since it is easily available), gramya (since it is grown in domestic places), bahumanjari, devadundubi (since it has many & long florets).
Ayurvedic properties: Rasa (Taste) pungent & bitter
Guna (Quality) laghu (light) & ruksha (dry)
Virya (Potency) Ushna (hot)
Vipaka (taste after digestion) Katu (Pungent)
Tulsi, in most places, flower in the months of November and December. The smell of tulsi flowers is germicidal (Kills the germs). Use of black tulsi reduces considerably the havoc caused by Malaria.
Basil has a unique power of purifying blood and killing of bacteria. It cleanses the intestines of the toxic matter and body of all ailments. One of its contents like thyme clears all skin disorders very effectively. Tulsi has live mercury in organic form and that fortifies the chemical factory within the body.
In cough, difficulty in breathing and pain in flanks the leaves can be given as such to chew or the juice mixed with honey is given. It is extremely useful in these cases.
In skin diseases like white discoloration, itching etc. the paste of the leaves can be applied.
In disorders of nose like nose blocks etc. 2 3 drops of tulsi juice is dropped into the nostrils. This is also effective in the case of headache.
In painful ears and where pus is coming out, tulsi juice can be filled in the ears for few minutes.
It also relives the stress due to noise pollution. The decoction of tulsi leaves can be given in convulsions, in body pain and joint pains.
The juice can also be given in loss of appetite and worms.
In difficulty in urination the seeds of tulsi can be taken. In fevers with cough, cold and chills tulsi is very useful. It can be made into decoction along with pepper and dry ginger.
It has anti-poisonous properties. If 2 or 3 gm of tulsi seeds are taken with water for a few days the blood purification takes place. The semen will also improve and become thick.
Parts used: Leaves, flowers, seeds & roots.
Dosage: Powder of the leaves: 1 5 gm, Tulasi juice: 5 10 ml. |
