Wingspan: 40 - 50mm.

Same sunny and pleasantly hot day on the trip through Rajasthan, travelling from Jaipur to Pushkar, stopping at a rest house to have tea and to shop souvenirs, and my lonesome decision: instead of going inside to chill out and buy silk shawls or marble elephants better to stay outside in the heat of early afternoon, eat a banana, drink some mineral water from out of my rucksack, and have fun with studying a glimpse of India's colourful nature on the road to Pushkar.

Plenty of flowers were around in front of the rest house. And plenty of butterflies, too.

The Pioneer, Belenois aurota, also known als Anaphaeis aurota, is a medium sized butterfly, distinctively black and white on its upper sides of wings. A rapid and powerful flier, it is known to be a migrant that may occur in large numbers. Its area of distribution stretches from tropical Africa to Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. Closely related species are reported from Australia.

Caterpillars feed on plants belonging to the caper family (Capparis sp.).

The plant the butterfly shown is sitting on is Tagetes erecta L., also known as Marigold. For more details on the plant please see my previous posting.

What an interesting shot. Very original, unusual and beautiful reproduction of colour tones, lighting and texture of the flower. Very impressive. The image of butterfly is amazing: it is perfect detailed, colourful (colours are bright and rich). BG. its colour tones are expressive. The POV and DOF here are so very beautiful and the colors are fantastic. These colors also help to give a perfect definition of the butterfly in the frame, and thanks to the impecable exposure they simply shine :)

What a splash of brilliant colours. You really spoil us rotten with your fabulous butterfly shots. As always it is a special treat to open one of your postings for one never leaves dissatisfied or disappointed.

The contrasting colours between the BG, flower, and butterfly (and even those colours on the insect) are an absolute pleasure-garden for the eye. The flower is spectacular, the butterfly is awesome, and the BG is pure magic. The detail captured is nothing short of supreme while the exposure was immaculate. One more flawless posting for your incredible portfolio.

Otra bella macro Peter con apropiado punto de vista, foco y agudeza.
El perfecto fondo difuso permite realzar la escena del primer plano sin interferencia alguna.
Tal vez los colores están ligeramente saturados, al menos en mi monitor, quizás por un efecto de sobre exposición o de post procesamiento.
Buen encuadre y elección del recorte.

Another beautiful macro Peter with appropriate point of view, focus and sharpness.
The perfect diffuse bottom allows to enhance the scene of the forefront without some interference.
Perhaps the colors are lightly saturated, at least in my monitor, maybe for an effect of over exposure or by post processed.
Good framing and election of the cropping.
